Title: Ends of the earth playability
Post by: CaydenJ on June 30, 2020, 03:39:31 PM
Hello, I was wondering if Ends of the Earth is still a good card to use? I remember some people were using it back with RoJ but I'm wondering if it is still relavent now with all the new cards and searchers. Thanks

It still has playability but is harder to use now as a soul generator on your opponent's deck with Storehouse (promo) being a staple in just about every competitive deck.  You can still use it on your own deck to get out a good enhancement, or a soul you want that will help you in your strategy.  And if you have a missionary in battle it can negate an evil or neutral card.

It's still an absolute staple in pretty much every deck.

I think there are just a lot more soul gen options now so it's not as common. I wouldn't go as far as to say it's a staple, but it's still powerful, especially if you have a way to deal with Storehouse.

I also agree: It depends on your deck and what you might need. I have EotE in my current deck I used during the online tournament season that was held recently (hopefully it will continue somehow). For me it was the best option fitting in that deck which can generate souls on the one hand and/or helps to setup/get speed on the other hand too.

Idk why Storehouse even matters. Ends'ing yourself is the true power of Ends.

Every deck can be improved by Ends.

Every deck can be improved by Ends.

I mean, I don't know about every deck.

Ends is one of those cards that got cut from a lot of lists by people who wanted to play with shiny new toys, but is still good. Both points in this thread regarding Storehouse (that it hurts Ends' use as soul gen, and that that doesn't matter because you want to Ends yourself anyway) are valid. There isn't really any new Look punishes. It's still absolutely playable, even if most people use the card slot for something like Storehouse now.

Correction - "most" decks

Ends was pretty much an auto-include regardless of other factors for a while after it initially came out but its definitely less so now. The biggest factor against it is the same downside that nearly all forts and sites have, which is that you can't put them in play until your turn and even then many require you to wait until a certain future point in time to get the benefits. In Ends case this is when you attack so fortunately if you draw it on your turn prior to your attack you effectively get value immediately. However, if you draw it later on your turn or on the opponent's turn, its a dead card until your next attack. That may seem like a small amount of time but with how few turns top level games can take to end these days, a card being dead for any amount of time is a huge downside. Whether or not I play Ends now comes down to how much alternate methods of soul generation I have and what card type I would cut to fit Ends in. I'm much more likely to add Ends into a deck when I can cut a GE for it rather than an EE, for example, since the dead draw period of most GEs and Ends overlap heavily (drawn during the opponent's turn). However, even then, GEs are live draws mid-battle while Ends is not which is a huge deal. Thus if my strategy involves lots of cards that allow me to draw during offensive battles I'm less likely to cut a GE for Ends even if I had room to cut a GE at all.

That said, the card is still powerful in most decks and unless your goal is perfect optimization for speed intensive games, Ends is a high value card.
