Yeah, it's a great game.
Quick question on the game:
Is the following a road of eight segments, or two roads of four segments (assuming all settlements are owned by same player)?

I prefer Catan because you can change the board but this game does just fine.

What do you do in it?

Settlers of Catan is a strategy board game where the board is made up of hexes, and each hex has one of five resources: wood, brick, fleece, grain and ore. The board is actually set up by the players at the beginning by placing all the hexes down next to each other.
Players build settlements at the corners between hexes, and roads along the edges connecting the hexes, to branch out and control more of the board. Each turn, a player rolls 2 6-sided dice. Each hex has a number, 2-12, and each hex matching the die roll grants that resource to any player with a settlement bordering that hex.
After the roll, the player can trade resources with other players, trade them to the bank (expensive), or spend the resources to build more roads, settlements, etc.
Each building is worth points, and you get bonuses for doing other stuff like having the longest single line of roads.
Settlers of Canaan is similar to this, but you play on a fixed board, so all the hexes are always in the same spot with the same resource and the same number. There is also a "Wall of Jerusalem" that people can build next to, at the bottom of the board, and then build the wall to get another bonus.

First person to 12 points wins. No player elimination, everyone is in it until the end.

Each settlement is worth a point. Each one you upgrade to a city is worth two points. Most bonuses are worth two points. Canaan also has a couple cards that are free points, I think. So you can usually just look at the board and count up the points in a matter of seconds.

I've always enjoyed the Catan-type games. Starfarers will always be my favorite, but I kind of like Canaan better than Catan by itself.

Agreed. I MUCH prefer Canaan to Catan. And the only copy of Catan I have is the treasure chest, anniversary edition. There's just so many more spaces in Canaan to play with. There's room to spread out even if you have 6 players. (I bought a Catan expansion just for the pieces)

How are there more spaces? The board is like half the size...

Actually, the board is like twice the size. Catan has 18 terrain hexes (19 if you count the blank one). The Canaan board has 36 terrain hexes on it.

You also need to be weary, a plague could come upon you at any time and destroy your harvest!
Wouldn't this be wary? I don't think being weary would help with the plague.

Our family really enjoys Settlers of Canaan. We can play it for hours on end. We originally just got it to get the two extra Redemption cards, but soon discovered that it was a ton of fun. FYI, the new version of the game doesn't have the two Redemption cards, I think.
