So, Prof U mentioned playing a game of Diplomacy by e-mail (http://www.cactusgamedesign.com/message_boards/board-card-games/axis-allies-32477/msg504308/#msg504308), and I was trying to see if there would be any interest in getting one started. I like the concept, and allowing a week for each turn allows for a lot of (ahem...) diplomacy, plus having a leisurely pace would be nice for this sort of game.
So, anyone else interested? Just reply here, or shoot me a PM :)
EDIT: Trying to get 2 games going, one experienced and one for newer players. Let us know if you want in, and how much you have played this in the past! Thanks!
-
I would be down to play! Though granted I havnt played in years and may need some refreshing on how to play :P
-
I would be willing to play, though I should probably read the rules one more time before playing :D
-
I would be up for it. gamesbyemail (http://gamesbyemail) may be a good choice for the medium.
-
I'm interested, and I like the idea of using that website, too.
I want to warn everyone volunteering that has NOT played this game before to consider carefully before joining. Diplomacy is a game that ONLY a specific type of gamer enjoys. There is no luck in the game (no dice, no cards, etc.) so if you like an element of randomness this game is NOT for you. It is a strategic game where you have to carefully think about how all of your movements will affect everyone else's and vice-versa. So if you aren't really an attention to detail person this game is NOT for you. And the 3 biggest dangers of Diplomacy are:
1 - People lose friends over this game. Players do things during the game that sometimes come across EXTREMELY personal and offensive. So if you are not REALLY good at separating what happens in the game from the relationships that you have with people outside the game, then Diplomacy is NOT for you.
2 - This is a LONG term commitment. The last time I was in an email game of Diplomacy we took 1 turn a week and it lasted about 6 months. For the game to be fun, everyone in the game needs to be able to ensure that they will actually be able to participate for the next half a year, and that they will NOT become disinterested and drop out of the game.
3 - This game is all about communication. For this to work well, players need to be emailing each other on a weekly basis to discuss strategy and tactics. If you aren't good at staying on top of email, then this game probably isn't for you either.
I've tried to point out all the worst stuff about the game here. If you have read through all that and still think that you'd like to play then feel free to sign on, and welcome aboard. It really is a fun game, and I look forward to playing it together :)

Above is the sole reason I didn't buy the game after my only time playing. It was Matt (best friend), Laurie (my wife), and I playing. The very fact that Laurie would even potentially betray me was too unnerving. I put a very high value on loyalty and I struggle to trust people, and the very nature of the game psychologically undercuts both to the point where I don't enjoy it.

I'd be interested, though I haven't played diplomacy before.

never done this game before but i am in sound really cool.

I echo Prof U's post completely, and hadn't thought about that because I am the type of player he describes who loves this kind of game. So, if you want in, I want you to post here (again, if you have already) considering the following:
1. Let me know that you won't take the game (and secret dealings that comes with it) personally. It's just a game, but it can still hurt some people (as pointed out above). So please think about your reactions before you post :)
2. Take a look at the rules (https://www.wizards.com/avalonhill/rules/diplomacy.pdf), and see if this is the kind of game for you. It is definitely not an action-heavy lucky game. It is about strategery and sneakery. Make sure it is your type of game! ;)
3. Let me know if you can commit to making your moves once per week and for a long, (long) term game. As Prof U pointed out, this will take awhile, and in order to be a good game we will have to have regular conversations with each other to negotiate orders (see the rules for more information on that).
If after looking through those three points you can commit to this, let me know and I'll add you to the list :) The game is for up to 7 people, but don't rush to respond without being sure you want to play. Thank you!

Cant stress this enough! This is actually the reason I havnt played in so many years lol a couple of my friends got burned the last time I played and now no one ever wants to play...
Im still down to play. But like I said ill need to refresh myself with the rules.

I'm in.
I'm already not friends with Mark, so I'm not worried about burning that bridge :P

Still up for it, despite the disclaimers ;)

Its not just that you can do them, its that to win you pretty much must do them. If you don't know what the game is, each player is one of seven "Great Powers" in pre-WWI Europe, and each is trying to outmaneuver the others into taking over a majority of the supply centers. however, since only one army can occupy a territory at a time, you have a limited number of armies and all armies are of the same strength, it often will take support of other players to take territories and protect your own, so you must make alliances and deals with them. In order to get ahead and win the game, you will have to lie to and betray someone at some point.

Lol, it sounds like it'd be funny. And a little annoying if you keep getting stabbed in the back. Keep your friends close and enemies closer ;) hahaha!

This doesn't seem appropriate for a Christian forum if that's the case

In order to get ahead and win the game, you will have to lie to and betray someone at some point.
This isn't always correct (although it usually is). Each player has to decide for themselves how to handle the ethical dilemmas of Diplomacy. Lying is completely accepted and even expected in the game, so most players are willing to tell two different players that they will be supporting their attacks when in reality they are only helping one to kill the other.
However, not all players choose to go the easy route. I personally choose to never intentionally tell another player something that is not true. But I don't always tell everything that I know either. So if an opponent is jumping to an inaccurate conclusion based on something someone said, I don't feel compelled to correct their misconception.
My choice to avoid lies in a game where most other players will still lie to me does give me a bit of a disadvantage. But I personally feel better about playing that way. And despite the handicap, I have had some success in the past.
I'm already not friends with Mark, so I'm not worried about burning that bridge :P
He lost you a TEAMs title, I'd be mad too. ;)
I just hope he won't use that against me to wipe me out in Spring 1901.
Also, I would highly suggest a spot in the game for Slugfencer, as he's been wanting to play for a really long time. Based on his regularity of communication with his opponents in ROOT, I think he will do a great job of staying committed to the game and communicating with everyone. I know that we already have 7 people wanting in, but maybe he could be an alternate player who could step in and take over a country if someone had to drop out.
-
Can you choose to assassinate?
-
Can you choose to assassinate?
No. Your moves are limited to a few options for each piece. They may:
1 - move/attack (going from one territory to an adjacent territory)
2 - hold/defend (staying where they are at)
3 - support another piece (either in defending where they are, or moving to somewhere else)
4 - convoy (only fleets can do this, and it helps armies move over water territories)
So if there are 3 armies adjacent to the same desired territory, then one of them will have to convince one of the others to "support" their attack on that spot so that they have a 2-1 advantage over the other player who is also trying to attack that spot. The name of the game is Diplomacy because it's all about using diplomacy to convince the other players to assist you in your goals enough to be able to take over at least half of the critical spots on the map ("supply centers").
-
That sounds really fun!
-
Since we seem to already have 7 players so quickly, perhaps we should divide into 2 games with experienced players in one game and new players in another. That way the experienced players don't take advantage of the new players, and everyone has more of an equal chance to win.
Also if we are going to start soon with the players we have, then we should probably talk about who is going to be what country. Countries can either be assigned randomly (random.org to the rescue), or can be assigned by a neutral party who we all send preferences to.
If we do the preferences, then we would each send a list of our #1, #2, #3, and #7 preferences. The neutral party would then assign countries so that everyone would get one of their top choices and no one would get their #7 choice. Of course some people don't care which country they get and just tell that to the neutral party (which helps everyone else get what they want).
-
Yes, I am still in. Thanks for reserving it. :)
-
So when are we starting
-
I agree with Prof U about possibly doing 2 games, 1 for experienced players and 1 for the newer players who like the idea and would like to learn to play. I also want to get all the details hammered out.
However, I have a tourney to deal with in the morning, so this will have to wait unfortunately ;) I will be back here soon to help work this out :)
-

We should probably say how many times we've played then. I think I've played 3-4 games by email and 2 games in person.
-
I have played two games both in person.
-
None for me
-
Two games online with other inexperienced players.
-
Two games in person, once with experienced players, myself.
-
I have yet to play a game.
-
I haven't played before,
But I'm really good at lying, just ask my mother what happened to her china.

So far we've got:
Experienced Game:
1. Redoubter
2. Prof U
3. Isildur
4. Thomas Hunter

Beginner Game:
1. iamalittleking
2. Drrek
3. RDT

I would be willing to play in the beginning game, or the experienced game. Whatever is fine with me

So are we waiting for each list to fell up. or if that's not plan what is
It would be my preference for us to let each list fill up before starting. Since we're committing the next 6 months to this project, I feel like it's worth waiting a couple weeks to make sure that the games are balanced. It also gives twice as many people the chance to play.
However, if no more people join after a while, we might be forced to combine games and just go with what we've got. Also, I don't feel like its really my call as I'm still seeing this as mainly Redoubter's gig, and I'm just participating and suggesting stuff.

It won't be just my gig, it's everyone's gig who wants in ;) I liked your splitting of the games, let's just all coordinate to get everyone who wants in to be able to play :)
And you can always have a game of less than 7, some of the countries just get troops that don't move. Hopefully that doesn't happen, though I thought we initially had 8 or 9 people respond that they wanted to play, but I only see 7 names so far...we should have decent-sized games in the end.

I have played twice but tend to pick up games quickly

I own the game, but have never gotten a group interested enough to actually play the game. I would love to play.

I'll play! I'm a board game fanatic. I've played this twice I think.

If you've played twice, then it would probably be most fair to put you in the experienced game. None of us has played a ton of games, but all the people in the beginner game will be playing for the first time.

Yes, you can play with less than 7. But I think it's a HUGE step down in how fun the game is. Of course that's just my opinion, but I'd rather wait for the game to fill up than to start with less players.
I suppose it doesn't matter as much for the beginner game though since it will be all of your first game. You won't know how much more fun the 7-player version is, so you won't be disappointed. And it will still give you a good chance to learn how to use your pieces effectively and use your communication with other players even more effectively :)

Since, this was brought back up by not me,

I didn't realize that telling half truths is not lying. I've probably sinned a lot less than I thought now!

I understand the point behind the sarcasm, and I'm not going to try to convince you to feel otherwise about it, because to you it is not alright to participate in this kind of game. There are others here who do not feel the same issue when playing a game like this, knowing what it is going in, but we should not try to convince you to join in :) I'd like to leave it at that, and hope everyone else is respectful of the positions of Alex (and others).
1 Corinthians 10:23-33
-
I didn't realize that telling half truths is not lying.
According to Merriam-Webster's Dictionary:
Definition of LIE
intransitive verb
1: to make an untrue statement with intent to deceive
2: to create a false or misleading impression
I typically just think of lying as the first definition. However, like Redoubter said, if you also consider the 2nd definition to by lying, that also makes sense and you should follow your conscience in that matter.
The way this plays out in Diplomacy is something like this:
Pretend that I know that the player controlling England is about to send a fleet to the English Channel to attack France. However the English player has lied and told the French player that he is NOT going to the English Channel. In my communications with France, I will NOT personally tell them that they are safe from English attack. However if it is in my best interest in the game for England to get the upper hand, then I also will not volunteer the information that England plans to attack them.
-
Well this hasn't been updated in a few weeks, no one new has come, shall the games begin?
-
Well this hasn't been updated in a few weeks, no one new has come, shall the games begin?
I would concur, since the experienced game would be missing just Italy (not a big loss ;)) and fewer players may mean an easier time learning the game for the other game. Prof U, what do you think?
-

Considering that we're only 1 player short on the experienced game I would suggest that we just recruit one more person to play. I think I have a friend who would be interested if no one else from the boards here volunteers.
As for the beginner game, I think it would be alright for them to start with less people since it will be more of a learning game. However even then I think 5 or 6 would be more fun than 4. Perhaps I can find a couple more people who would like to join them. Or perhaps someone else knows someone off-board that would be interested in checking out a new game (important that they are willing to commit to seeing it through for the next 6 months).
-
Any updates on this game?

I'll do this, but I've never played before.

Not yet. Your game still needs 1 more player.

Why don't we just start both games and leave out Italy? From what I understand, no one likes Italy anyway.

From what I understand, no one likes Italy anyway.
How rude.
In any case, Prof U, I appreciate you keeping an eye on this. For some reason I have been very distracted and busy of late, not sure why (http://www.cactusgamedesign.com/message_boards/official-tournaments/2013-northeast-regionals-bel-air-md-information-and-answers!/) ::)
-
From what I understand, no one likes Italy anyway.
Actually Italy won the last game of Diplomacy that I played. The game really is best with 7 players.
In any case, Prof U, I appreciate you keeping an eye on this.
Glad to help out.

I agree its best with 7 players, but we've been waiting for over a month to start a game. I thinks its probably best to just start at this point.

I agree its best with 7 players, but we've been waiting for over a month to start a game. I thinks its probably best to just start at this point.
We'll be playing for 6 months, so waiting one month to get started doesn't seem like a big deal to me. I have a friend who has played before (we were enemies the whole game last time), and I'm hoping he'll join and be our 7th player. I also know that slugfencer has talked about wanting to play for a long time, but has had crazy stuff in his schedule for the last month or so. I'm also hoping that if we wait long enough, that his schedule will normalize and he'll be able to join us.
If the players in the Beginner game want to go ahead and start without Italy, I'm fine with that (since I'm not in that game, and since they're all just learning the game together anyway).
If all the other players in the experienced game want to start without the full number of players, they can too. Diplomacy is always a democracy, and I'm not running this show, only helping out Redoubter. But I'm personally not interested in a less than full game, so you'd probably be missing 2 countries.
-
I'm guessing you mean Kayleb Mr.Underwood?
-
I'm guessing you mean Kayleb Mr.Underwood?
Nope, I was talking about someone else. Do you think Kayleb would like to play?
-
I dont know. I just asked Stevie, if she says no, I'll ask him.
-
I would really like to start, I think since it will be a learning game for most/all then it will be fine without 7 people
-
I'm sorry, this is moving a little too slow for my tastes, and I don't think I would be able to play this slowly. I have played several other games by email that do take months to play (Britannia) and I just don't feel like this would be one I would be able to commit my time to and keep track of in addition to these other games. I will have to drop out, hope it works out for everyone else!
-
I'm sorry, this is moving a little too slow for my tastes, ...I will have to drop out
I understand your frustration. I really thought that I would've heard back from at least one of the several people I contacted about this game.
It occurs to me that perhaps some of the other people who initially expressed interest might also have re-evaluated their level of commitment to play. Perhaps the best thing to do would be to have people re-confirm their interest to play, and to just go ahead and start the first game with the experienced players + 1 of the rookies (or more if some experienced players drop out). Then if the game is a success, then there could be more interest in the future for others to join another game.
What does everyone think about this plan? Also, could everyone at least chime in on whether they are still interested in playing?
-
i'll play. and Ill be fine with joining the experienced if you think i would be able to Mr.Underwood. we've played enough strategy games together.

Yes I am still interested in playing.

I appreciate your willingness Wyatt, and I think you probably could handle it. But I think we'd have to go in order of how people signed up, so there would be several people ahead of you.
-
aight. just sayin if you need to. I thought you'd volunteer people. Like other teachers in classes. Lol
-
I am still interested in playing
-
Confirming my interest.
-
I am still interested, but I will be out of the country from July 8-24. I am as of yet unsure whether or not I will have internet access during that time.
-
Confirming my interest.
-
Still playing of course, just waiting to see if anyone wants to grab those last spots from among the off-board people mentioned before ;)
-
Yeah, for sure in
I'm also willing to try my hand with the experienced players
-
I am still interested but if need be I have no problems with dropping out.

Based on what we're seeing here so far, it seems like we should either:
A - wait until July 24th to make sure that Thomas Hunter will have internet access at the beginning of the game when it is so critical, and pick up iamalittleking
B - go ahead and start without Thomas Hunter and pick up iamalittleking and Drrek
-
I'm sure RDT would pick it up fast. :p THrow him in there with us.
-
Sorry for taking so long. I am still in.
-
I've never played diplomacy before, but I like strategy games and it sounds fun. Are there any spots left in the beginner game?

I can play--just let me know if that's ok.

Based on what we're seeing here so far, it seems like we should either:
A - wait until July 24th to make sure that Thomas Hunter will have internet access at the beginning of the game when it is so critical
B - go ahead and start without Thomas Hunter and pick up iamalittleking[/quote]
-
I am cool with waiting.
-
What Prof U. hasn't been telling you all this time is that he's been secretly attacking everyone else before the game even starts and then claiming he just wants to wait a little bit longer to start... ::)
That's how good he is at diplomacy... ;)
-
I have played many games with Thomas Hunter and believe he will contribute greatly to the game.

Shhhhhh. I've almost got the solo victory in hand at this point. Just wait until everyone picks countries and they all realize that they only have 1 supply center left to start the game. Don't spoil my strategy :)
On a serious note, it would also be my preference to wait a couple more weeks so that Thomas Hunter can stay in the game. Who knows....maybe in those 2 weeks we'll have one more new player sign up and both the experienced and beginner games will be able to start at the same time.
-
We don't even need to wait the whole time. I leave on Monday (a week from today), and by Wednesday I'll know whether the training camp has reliable access (and I'll be seven hours ahead of Central Time). The actual camp is supposed to have access, but only in certain areas, and at times when I could log on, everyone will be trying to get on. I will likely be able to play, but there may be a bit of wait (if for no other reason than the aforementioned time zone differences).

I would agree with that, it'd be nice for both games to have 7, and we can wait a week or so to see about this:

Since your moves would be due weekly (or whatever we set it for), the strain should be lessened. Let us know when you have more info on availability :)

It's too late already!! Prof has assigned me Luxembourg!!! :o

Actually, I would be willing to volunteer to fill in Thomas' position, thus bearing the tremendously difficult proposition of managing 2 countries at once!?!?!!??? :P

Wow that is so generous of you to offer. However, I wouldn't want to put such a burden on anyone else. In fact, once the game starts you are welcome to proxy any of your units which are too burdensome to me, and I'll be glad to turn in orders for them :)
Actually, I'm not sure if the game site we're using actually is set up for proxies, so that might be impossible :(

So...I'm back from the trip. Everyone else still interested?

Let's GO! :D

Experienced Game:
1. Redoubter
2. Prof U
3. Isildur
4. Thomas Hunter
5. wmd1999
6. redemptioncousin
7. slugfencer
Beginner Game:
1. iamalittleking
2. Drrek
3. RDT
4. Wyatt Marcum
5. sk
6. pilgrim14
7.
At this point it seems like it would be best for Redoubter to create a new thread specifically for the Experienced Game. In that new thread we can figure out how to assign countries. We could just use random.org. Or another way I've seen is to have everyone submit their 3 top preferences (or state that they don't have any preference). Then it is usually possible to give everyone a country that they like.
We can let this thread continue for the Beginners to either have 1 more person join, or to decide that they want to go ahead and start with 6 players. Although I'm not sure about Wyatt, since his internet access will be limited for the next few weeks (until school starts).

New thread set up (http://www.cactusgamedesign.com/message_boards/board-card-games/diplomacy-board-game-let's-get-rolling!-(experienced-game)/msg513910/#msg513910). Experienced players, roll out!
For the Beginner game, we can wait until Wyatt is ready for sure, go ahead now, or wait for a 7th. I say do the first, while hoping a 7th joins.

Hi guys,
I just wanted to let you know that my friend Stephen Coates is interested in joining this Beginner game of Diplomacy. He is also in our Redemption playgroup here at Oakdale, although he didn't get the chance to come to Nats with us this summer. He's just heard of Diplomacy for the first time this week, but I think he'll pick up on it quickly, and you guys will have fun playing with him.
I also talked to Wyatt, and he is still hoping to do this although his internet access may be limited to 2-3 times per week. Still enough to get his orders in, but his communication may be a bit sporadic.
Anyway, that gives you guys a full slate of people. So I think you're ready to go. Someone will need to go set up a game here. (http://gamesbyemail.com/Games/Politics) and kinda be the person in charge of this game. Any volunteers?
-
well before we do anything else shouldn't we decide who is who. just draw it out of a make a list of fav to leas want to do or just first come first serve.

Yeah, that's a good idea. If I were running this game, I would have everyone post here to list their top 3 country choices (or state that they really don't care which country they get). That way we see if everyone is still interested in playing in this game, and if it works out like normal, then everyone can end up with one of their top choices (assuming that a couple people don't really care at all which country they get).
-
Yay!
My preference would be England, Russia, or France.
-
My preference is Italy, Austria hungry, or turkey
-
My preference is not Italy, not Italy and not Italy.
-
I just talked to Stephen Coates, and he has a slight preference for England, but is really OK with any country.
Bad news is that I talked to Wyatt today and he said he's gonna have to drop out.
Good news is that opens a spot for 1 more player who wants to join :)

I assume that you guys still are looking for 1 more player and for one of you to take the lead in getting things started. The experienced game has been going for a little while, and has been really fun so far.
I suppose another possibility is that whoever is eliminated first in the experienced game could join the beginner game and be the leader who gets things started. It might help to have one experienced player to kinda help answer questions for anyone who is confused at the start.

I think that's a good idea--just stick the xp player w/a tougher country like ger/aus

Good idea. We'll give the experienced player (whoever that ends up being) Austria (which is probably the hardest country to be). Meanwhile, what are the country preferences of the other 6 of you guys? Please list your top 3 choices or just say that you don't care if that is the case.
-
In order to get ahead and win the game, you will have to lie to and betray someone at some point.
I'm glad to report that the experienced game just finished and to my recollection, none of the surviving 3 players lied to anyone throughout the game. The "End Game Report" can be found here. (http://www.cactusgamedesign.com/message_boards/board-card-games/diplomacy-board-game-let%27s-get-rolling!-(experienced-game)/msg522179/#msg522179)
As for going forward, I know that some of the players from the experienced game are ready for a break for a while, but perhaps at least one of them would be interested in taking charge to set up a new game and be the 7th player for the beginner game that never started to my knowledge. Any takers?
