Title: Interested in trying a new board/card game? Malta!
Post by: TimMierz on January 25, 2009, 06:01:37 PM
(If this belongs in the Market, move it there, and I'm sorry.)

I'm selling copies of a board/card game I made, Malta! You may have had the opportunity to enjoy the game at Southeast Regionals this past year. The game features a randomly set up board, a deck of over a hundred cards that will mess with the board, the pieces, players' hands, the pieces... basically anything possible. The goal of the game is to not lose. If you manage to be the only player still in the game, the only player who hasn't run out of cards and hasn't been stuck on the board, you are the winner/not-loser.

Testimonial by RR: "Malta is REALLY FUN.  Oh yes I remember it >.> *grumbles about cards that don't let me talk*"
Testimonial by 777Godspeed: "Malta is fun and easy to learn and a must have for any gamer... [It's] an awesome game that I will take with me most everywhere I go. Redemption Tournaments, Family get-togethers, Friendly get-togethers, vacations and anywhere else I can think to take it."
Testimonial by STAMP: "Malta! is a BLAST!"

If you're interested, head to its BoardGameGeek page (http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/40421) and/or contact me. I'm selling copies for $20, plus $5 for shipping. (Sorry, no trades.) Happy gaming!

Assuming you mean 2005 (I was 8 years old in 1995), I'm the one in the gray T-shirt with black sleeves, getting way too excited about yelling "Malta!"

I see you! and I anxiously await Malta! arriving at my doorstep. Ok, it will probably end up at the end of the road in the P.O. lock boxes, but you know what I mean.   ;D

Godspeed,
Mike

I'm suing for one copy! ;) kidding. If I had money I'd buy it. It really is fun. Remember when chris? got the no talking card that first time and lost cuz he asked what it did? XD I endorse this game. It is quick, yet has strategy, randomness, fun, and creativity. Just never play anyone named TIM ;) (Tim wins is an unused card Tim made. Tim wins the game. If there are two Tims at the table the one with the longer last name wins). It has alot of strategy in it but  has that sense of 'this isn't about the game, its just 100% fun' with it to. It is great for quick games/parties.

One question to Tim. How did ya make the board be able to be shipped with all the flipping of tiles?

As you can see on BGG, the new set uses double-sided cards for the board. One side has the normal face, and the back has the "0 circle" removed shape.

Ah, I didn't look at the pix. Oh that looks so much more professional.  I love the container is a deck box. I got to say I like the roundness more. It allows for more patterns. Have you ever thought of taking making a black hole type board? A black 0 in the middle and all tiles lead into it?

In the newest version of Malta!, there is no preset board. If you want to make the board do that, you're certainly welcome to. By default it's set up randomly (except the bottom row), but players can do whatever they want.

Alright, this was FUN!   2 thumbs up
Malta is fun and easy to learn and a must have for any gamer.
2-10 players = tons of fun. Did I mention this game was fun?
We really liked the idea of getting to choose our own pieces to use.

Tim, you have invented an awesome game that I will take with me most everywhere I go. Redemption Tournaments, Family get-togethers, Friendly get-togethers, vacations and anywhere else I can think to take it. Did I mention that I have a signed game box?   :o

Godspeed,
Mike

I invented the game in October of 2004, and have been making changes to it since.

I still have copies available. Order your set before I run out. Have as much fun as Godspeed's ridiculously adorable kids!

Seven copies have been distributed, with about six more claimed (they're old friends waiting till they can meet me in person, to not pay for shipping).

Here is a question for you Tim.

If I play Swap Identities during my turn, does the player I swap with now finish "my turn"?

Godspeed,
Mike

Please post abilities. ;)

Swap Identities: Swap hands, pieces, and seats with any opponent.

None of those things would cause you to not continue. If you still have more cards to play, you play as many as required, and then you move your (new) piece. The player who is now to your left then takes his turn.

Sounds good. That is what we thought, but the wording was slightly different from Swap Seats so I wanted to double check.

Mike

The second sentence of Swap Seats is a "clarification", much like the second sentence of Nero. :) Some people were confused by Swap Seats without the "Take your hand with you and continue your turn" included, so I put it in. Still, a lot of people don't read the text, so a lot of people still play that wrong, along with Redraw Hand and Sweet Silence. But you're a Redemption player, so you know that reading matters. You just read too much into it. :D

Ok, we have played Malta! with the family several times now. It becomes more fun each time. Now it is time to expand and play the 10 person version.  :o  That is gonna rock.  Game mechanics are smooth. My 8 year old son picked up on the game the first go around, so I think that would be a safe starting age, although he was introduced to Redemption at 6 yrs. old and grasped the fundementals fairly quickly.
My greatest plan to win, totally backfired on me. My oldest had 4 cards in hand and my youngest and wife had 2 cards in hand. I was holding Amplify (Double all numbers on the next card played.) and 3 - Discard Any Two (Discard any two cards from any players' hands.) and 3 other misc. cards, 7 total and I had to play 4 of them.
I played Amplify and Discard any Two on my oldest to d/c his hand and my youngest and wife got the other Discard Any Two to d/c their hands. I thought I was set, but it all backfired. My oldest ended up losing on his next turn, my youngest was able to draw 4 and play, my wife was able to draw 3 and play and my oldest had Reinvite (Select a player who has lost. He draws a card and rejoins the game wherever he left off.) played on him and they all proceeded to gang up on me. Whaaa? What did I do?    ;D

Godspeed,
Mike

Oof, that's rough. The best laid plans, foiled by them getting good draws on their next turn. Managing to get all three Discard Any Two cards at once AND playing them all at once sounds excellent, but I guess their board position was just too much. Very cool that you guys are playing cutthroat, though! Keep the session reports coming, I love 'em!

Sweet Silence (Selected player may not say anything until his next turn, unless specified by a card. For each infraction, he must give a card to the player on his left.) Is the picture on the card anyone we might know? or is it just a random picture?

Godspeed,
Mike

It's a picture of a college friend of mine. An old version of the card had a different friend of mine, but I had to remake all the cards for this printing (so they'd be of a good resolution), so I switched it up. I'm crazy like that.

Blind Faith, on the other hand, just came from a Google Image search.

I'm surprised you didn't secretly take a picture of me glaring at yall (I hate that card) when it was played on me.

Are you by any chance going to Nationals this year?  If so, please bring it along (though I guess Schaef probably will).  This looks very interesting.

I'm not currently planning on going to Nationals. Also, Stephen hasn't purchased a copy at this point, so he won't be bringing it. However, several West Coasters have gotten Malta!, and so if they bring it they might be able to spread the fun around.

I believe Tim can be added to the list of prophets in the REG.   ;)

Yes, 777Godspeed and/or I will be bringing our copy of Malta! to Nats.
