What is your favorite board game, it can be any kind like Cactus board games or any one out there.
-
My vote right now is for Starcraft, but it's as much a sentimental favorite as anything; I have played a number of very excellent board games which I would not hesitate to recommend.
-
Settlers of Catan.
-
Monopoly
PSYCHE!
Rather: Space Hulk's pretty neat.
-
Too many games to even name.
-
Here's my TOP 15:
1 - Fortress America
2 - RISK: LOTR trilogy ed.
3 - Shadows Over Camelot
4 - Diplomacy
5 - Samurai Swords
6 - Heroscape
7 - Star Wars: Epic Duels
8 - Twixt
9 - Ticket to Ride
10 - Settlers of Catan
11 - Blokus
12 - Stratego: Electronic Version

-
For a plain-old boardgame, Monopoly.

All my game ratings: link (http://boardgamegeek.com/collection/user/TimMierz?sort=rating&sortdir=desc&columns=title|thumbnail|rating|bggrating|plays|comment&rated=1&ff=1&subtype=boardgame)
My top game for right now is Galaxy Trucker (http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/31481/galaxy-trucker), with Nexus Ops (http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/15363/nexus-ops) close behind.
-
If Dominion counts as a board game, that's my vote.
-
Go.
I wish I knew more people who played, though. Despite its simple rules, it's difficult to pick up on the strategy when you learn it, so most of the people whom I've taught are reluctant to continue playing.

Most abstract strategy games work that way. The problem with teaching someone a game like that which you have already mastered is that they have very little chance of ever winning for a loooooong time. That probably makes them reluctant to continue playing.
My suggestion would be to pick up a new abstract strategy game (like Twixt or Blokus) and actually learn the game with some of your friends. That way all of you will be pretty even and they'll have more of a chance to win. This will probably lead to them playing the game with you more.

I have the same struggle with teaching people Redemption, I'm good, they're new.

One thing that I recently did was to build decks of varying degrees of difficulty (1-5). When I teach people the game, I start by playing a homemade starter deck with them which makes our decks equal. As they begin to advance in their skill and increase the power of their deck, I play against them with my leveled decks. When they beat a deck, then they advance to the next one. That way I am always playing a deck that is only slightly better than theirs and it makes an attainable goal.
-
that is exactly how nathanial pearson teaches people to play. he calls it 'the gauntlet'. :)
-
Man... I don't think I've beaten you in forever.... If that's your LV 1 deck then I need to practice more.... I'll never beat your 5... maybe I should get a deck-list from you - Do you mind if I play it at nationals?
-
Sweet. I'll get right on that as soon as I have the cards.
-
Memoir '44
Malta!
Godspeed,
Mike

Rail Baron rocks my socks! Also Monopoly, Settlers of Canaan, Journeys of Paul, basically anything that someone will play with me. I love all types of games!
-
Not Board per se, but I just played Munchkin, and it was a delight.

Yay, another fan! Most people I know either don't like that game or got bored of it.
-
I'm a MASSIVE fan of anything that's a genre parody/doesn't take itself seriously/tounge-in-cheek combo.
-
Chess.
I don't think Dominion or Race for the Galaxy count, considering they consist only of cards and chips. :)
-
I would tend to let those count. The definition of "board game" is usually broad enough that people are willing to include Yahtzee or Scattegories, two party-style games with naught a board.
What's weird is I would not count a card game that uses a standard deck of playing cards. So I would allow Tichu but not Euchre, even though they're about 90% the same. Or collectible/trading card games, or pen-and-paper RPGs. So I guess it's weird what I would and would not include.
-
I like Cash Flow
-
Starcraft, Twilight Imperium, and Battle Star Galactica.
-
my fav would have to be Battleball (with the enhanced rules) i also like Jamaica i think is the name, its a pirate game where you race around an island, its alot of fun, and Shadows Over Camelot even though it is impossible to win haha i heard settlers of cataan was really good but i havent played it yet

Another Battleball fan!
Craig Van Ness is one of my favorite designers.
-

I didn't know anyone else out there played Battleball :)
As for Shadows, the groups that I play with usually win (although we all got killed last time).
-
It's time you started playing with Merlin's Company :p

Well....if anyone sees this other thread (http://www.cactusgamedesign.com/message_boards/index.php?topic=22419.msg351558#msg351558) and is feeling generous :)

battleball is awesome! i just have a hard time finding people to play with haha my pastor got me into it.
and my group has only beaten shadows once and we cheated just so we could say we beat it haha

Here's the "7 keys" to beating shadows.
#1 - use the card swap at the beginning of the game to give Percy the full house to beat Lancelot, then he can go there right away, and start putting the nasty cards on the bottom of the deck from early in the game.
#2 - go down to 2 lives at the beginning of the game and usually keep all the knights at that level. You don't need more life than that, and it buys a couple free draws to start the game.
#3 - use Arthur to get the Holy Grail also early in the game. Have him draw a few times and then go over. From then on he can just trade cards with anyone who has a grail so that he never runs out.
#4 - ignore the dragon. He's simply not worth beating.
#5 - beat Excalibur last. It is the easiest, since you just have to throw away any cards, and the grails will be useless by this point anyway. You may have to send someone there temporarily early in the game to keep it from disappearing, but don't finish it off until the end.
#6 - draw cards more than putting on siege engines. Many times they won't hurt you and sometimes they will help you (ie. putting on that last black sword to fill the table when you already have plenty of white ones for a majority).
#7 - if you are playing with the traitor, then put on 6 seige engines early and then accuse everyone in the game. There won't be any swords on the table at that point, so nothing bad will happen, and you'll know whether to trust everyone.
-
That's weird, we usually start with the grail because it's one people can spam, and send Sir Kay after Excalibur so he can take the combination of those two powers and stay home fighting siege engines all day.
Also, you can only make one accusation per player per game.

I agree about getting the Grail early (Key #3 above), but fighting siege engines isn't a problem as long as you draw cards more than put down seige engines.
Also, you can only make one accusation per player per game.
I know, you simply have everyone accuse the person on their right. It takes 1 round max, and you're done.
-
RISK is the best board game ever. I also played Redemption:City of Bondage lately and i thoroughly enjoyed it.

RISK is the best board game ever.
Ugh. I can't believe you still think that after last night. I should have lost, ended up winning, and didn't enjoy it very much. It took way too long, and I was tired with a headache. Settlers is by far better.
-
this might be true but i blame it on Joelle.

You obviously haven't played Cutthroat Caverns

That's kind of a long time to go with absolutely no response to the black cards coming up. Doesn't the cost outweigh the small benefit of just knowing who the traitor is, especially when he can continue to do traitory things even after he is revealed? Plus, accusing to your right gives the traitor an opportunity to play something like Fate or Clairvoyance if he has it in his hand and get an additional screw job on the team before the next player accuses him.

Risk = Throwing dice at eachother
...actually the latter sounds more fun.

#1 - I don't find the traitor to be nearly as dangerous once they are revealed as I do having to play every turn as if the next person might purposefully put down the last siege engine, or draw that black card that we all know needs to stay where it is until Percy can put it on the bottom.
#2 - As for playing specials like Fate and Clairvoyance, are you suggesting that any player can play those cards when it is not even their turn?
-
... Monopoly,
Ban.

Given the possibility that the game is played with no traitor, I can't agree that I would take sacrificing an entire round of good actions to potentially allow one player to take a bad action plus a bad action every turn (as opposed to taking a bad action and a good action of questionable value), against a 12%-68% chance that there is no bad guy at the table at all. It doesn't seem statistically sound.
#2 - As for playing specials like Fate and Clairvoyance, are you suggesting that any player can play those cards when it is not even their turn?
... what? Why would you think I said that, and why would the traitor even need to play the card out of turn? This makes no sense.
-
Given the possibility that the game is played with no traitor, I can't agree
Despite the odds, somehow every time we play with the traitor, someone is the traitor.
... what? Why would you think I said that, and why would the traitor even need to play the card out of turn? This makes no sense.
Oops, miscommunication there. Pretend I said accuse to the left :)

There are obviously two different types of Board gamers signing on to this thread. Those that are gamers for life and those that game on occasion.
-
Dominion
Monopoly
-
ewww monopoly
I once started a game at 10 o'clock at night. At 3 in the morning we just gave up and went to sleep
I will never play that vile game again >:(
-
Dominion
Monopoly
Only 2 and one of them is MONOPOLY? Cmon LN, you can do better than that.
Yeah, I love MonopoZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ
-
Hey, it's a classic okay!
We're more casual gamers, we play games that you play with friends and don't mind if you don't follow the rules. So here's our favorites:
Taboo
Loaded Questions
Catch Phrase (similar to taboo, if we have a younger crowd we play this)
Cranium
-
Monopoly is the best game ever and also Catch Phrase is not a board game but it is awesome anyway.
-
There are obviously two different types of Board gamers signing on to this thread. Those that are gamers for life and those that game on occasion.
The issue here is that pre-hardcore board gamers "occasional ones" are wary about dropping $60-70 on a game that may or may not be fun. Breaking this barrier requires a gamer for life to evangelize said games.
-
Yeah the really good board games are very expensive. Dominion is the only one that I've played so far that I liked enough to spend a lot of money on.
-
I got Space Hulk because I'm a big fan of 40k. No one will play it with me though...
-
Does anybody like scrabble or risk?!?
-
i already posted about Risk and if you read the whole conversation next time you might see scrabble...
