Title: DOMINION
Post by: lightningninja on January 11, 2011, 06:37:27 PM
Anyone played with the new cards? Definitely adds a lot of strategy to the game. =)

Chris Bany taught me how to play Dominion.  All I have is the base game and Intrigue.  It is a fun game.  I have not tried any other cards.

Prosperity ups the ante.  Platinum is the new Gold, Colony is the new Province, and 10 is the new 7.

I've played the game once or twice thanks to JSB23 since he can't seem to keep Redemption Tournaments all Redemption.

I play with all the expansions at the same time, when I play online for free.  You can too if you go here. (http://dominion.isotropic.org/)  My name there is "SirPent", and I'd be glad to play with you there.

Awesome!  Now that I know that's you, I'll look for you when I'm on :)

Yes Iv'e played it before and I love it. The worst expansion was Alchemy, it made the game so stupid because all the cards were over powred.

You're kidding right?  I find the cards in Alchemy to be underpowered.  Other than University and Alchemist, I don't bother even buying potions because there aren't any cards that I would bother buying with it.

What do you call Golem and Possession. Those cards are completely broken.

Possession is too powerful, that is true.  I forgot about it because I usually eliminate that from being a possible card when I use the random generator.  I'm still not sold on Golem though.

Yes, but at cost 6 plus a potion, it's effectively a more expensive buy than a Province, and there also exists the possibility that if the player on your left has a crap hand, you just relieved him of that and allowed him to draw a fresh hand.

Golem's kind of a different animal.  If you're playing with a number of cards from Alchemy and/or Intrigue, it has a higher return because those are action-heavy sets.  But you also stand the chance to get stung with something like Salvager or Upgrade or Trading Post that forces you to take an undesirable action.

There have been decks, though, where I just got all the Actions I could, cycled them with Golems and piled on the Vineyards.  I lost the game by a couple points but I got all my points with Vineyards and my opponent had several Provinces.  What I like about cards like Golem, therefore, is the capacity to gather points without relying on the old Province race.

Is that a play on Serpent? Are you trying to tell us something? :P

Yes, actually my game name has multiple meanings.  The first is "Sir" which makes me think of nobility and chivalry, which are character traits that I hope I exhibit when I play games.  The second is "Pent" (as in pent up emotions), which makes me think of keeping emotions under control, and is also something I hope I exhibit when I play games.

As for combining the two words together to sound like "serpent", I would direct you to this Bible verse. (http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Matthew%2010:16&version=KJV) :)

Not sure if this is the best place to post this, but the new Dominion expansion has recently been announced: Cornucopia (http://www.riograndegames.com/games.html?id=383).

Thanks, but I don't actually understand what you're talking about.

I am excited about more new cards, but I have to say that the description of this particular set sounds less interesting than some of the others so far.

The description tends to be a broad, tongue-in-cheek overview, probably hinting at a lot of card names buried in the text.

As for the last paragraph, it seems a natural place for the game to go.  Alchemy focused on actions (and I guess potions) and rewarded the player for having actions in the deck (Golem and Vineyard spring quickly to mind).  There are several cards in Prosperity that reference your coins in hand, and cards like Duke and Baron from Intrigue referenced victory cards.  The next logical progression from referencing specific types would be to reference multiple types.

That's not to say I expect it will be Best Set Evar or anything; my expectations for a half-size set are suitably lowered.  But I do enjoy the half-size set I own already.

I'm not sure how much I'll like this set. I expect it to have the same love/hate reaction as the last half-sized set (which is possibly the reason it is half-sized), but I was on the hate side of Alchemy, so my expectations are kind of low. On the positive side, I am especially anxious to see how the "5 unique cards" will work. I also expect that this will be a good expansion for newer players still in the one of everything phase (or maybe that's a bad thing...).

No wonder my name is taken sometimes when I go to sites.  I wondered who in the world would also come up with that name :)

Haha yes, he is a very popular character and has that exact title and name.  :)

As for the new set, I'm sure it's awesome cause all but Alchemy were (Alchemy was just bleh and I haven't played very much with it).
