Title: Anyone up for a game of Diplomacy?
Post by: Isildur on August 27, 2015, 06:13:41 PM
Awhile back a number of us played a online game of Diplomacy and it was a blast. Would anyone be interested in playing a game? I think I found another online Diplomacy program that should work great. Just need six more players for a full game!

Quick question for those interested in playing... Do you guys have any preference to how long you have to turn in orders?

I've never played diplomacy but I've always been interested.

I also really enjoyed that last game of Diplomacy and have thought about playing again now that I'm in Indonesia.  Put me down as interested :)

Don't you mean 4?  Who from this thread aren't you counting?

I have a guy that goes to church with me here in Indonesia (named Donovan) that likes to play Diplomacy.  He'd like to join our game.  So with Slugfencer, that would be 6 guys.

I have a guy that works with me here at the school (named Greg) who also would like to play, but he's only played one time and really just learned how to play because they didn't finish.  So he's concerned that he might not be able to hang with seasoned players.  I've played other strategy games with him though (like RISK 2210A.D.) and I think he could handle it if you guys were OK with a relative noob being in the game.

If so, that would give us the full 7 players and we could start soon.

I'm a relative noob as well. I've only played like 4 games.

I'm a noob as well, having played exactly 0 games.

Well it sounds like noobs are welcome then.  I'll tell my co-worker that he's welcome to join, and that means we are ready to begin.

How do we want to do countries?  Usually each person submits their top 3 choices, and then we try to give everyone one of those.  If you don't have a preference, then feel free to just say that.  It makes it easier to work out if there's 1 or 2 people who don't care what country they get.

The other alternative would be to just randomly assign countries.  What does everyone prefer?

Russia
Turkey
Austria. but if I am the only one that wants certain one, random works.

Awesome that we have enough players! I'll try and get something organized in the next couple of days. I'm pretty swamped at school right now.

I'm down for random countries but it doesn't really matter to me!

I would do whatever everyone else wants. If you want my 3 countries  they are:  Germany  Austria and italy.

I'm also up for random if needed.  If we pick countries, I'd prefer to not be in the England, France, Germany triangle since I was up there last time.  So I guess I'd go with Turkey, Russia, Italy.

What should I do about the other 2 guys that wanted to play here?  Should I have them join the forum here, or just wait until Isildur sets up the actual Diplomacy game and have them just connect over there?
Title: Re: Anyone up for a game of Diplomacy?

I just heard from Donovan, and his top 3 choices are England, Turkey, and Russia.

So far looking at preferences shared, it looks like everyone could get their top pick if we did the following:
Wyatt - Russia (1st)
Slugfencer - Germany (1st)
Prof U - Turkey (1st)
Donovan - England (1st)
Isildur - Whatever's left (no pref)
Drrek - ??
Greg - ??

4 people getting their first picks? that is very convenient.

I just heard from Greg yesterday, and he said he doesn't have any preferences for countries.  So as long as Drrek wants either Austria, France, or Italy, then everyone will get their first pick of countries.

Wyatt - Russia (1st)
Slugfencer - Germany (1st)
Prof U - Turkey (1st)
Donovan - England (1st)
Isildur - Whatever's left (no pref)
Greg - Whatever's left (no pref)
Drrek - ??

I can take France.
Title: Re: Anyone up for a game of Diplomacy?
Post by: Prof Underwood on September 24, 2015, 08:27:11 PM
OK, so I went to random.org to determine the last two countries (Austria & Italy).  Since Austria came first alphabetically, I focused on that one.  I figured that I'd just randomly generate an integer for both Greg and Isildur, and then whoever was higher would get Austria.  The numbers turned out to be Greg (70) and Isildur (32).  Therefore Greg got Austria.

So now that all countries are assigned, when do we start?

Greg - Austria
Donovan - England
Drrek - France
Slugfencer - Germany
Isildur - Italy
Wyatt - Russia
Prof U - Turkey

What website is the game going to run on?  Should we all go there and make an account already so that we'll be ready?

Last game we used http://www.gamesbyemail.com/Games/Politics

And that worked well, but Isildur said that he had found an even better place, so I'm looking forward to seeing what it is.

Sorry for the delay guys! School has been a mess for me this past week.

Here is the website! http://www.playdiplomacy.com/

I haven't used it before but I've heard great things about it! I'm down for trying out this site or using gamesbymail. If you guys are cool with using playdiplomacy just make a account! I'll post the password for the game and the game name when I get a chance!

I just went to playdiplomacy.com and started to make an account.  However one of the requirements of an account there is to make the following promises:

Quote
I promise that I will not play more than one account
I promise I will not communicate in games outside of the game mechanisms
I promise I will not ally based on who I know in the game
I promise I will not carry grudges across games

I cannot honestly promise that I will not communicate with any of you outside the game mechanisms.  I am going to continue being a part of this Redemption forum.  I am FB friends with some of you.  And I see a couple of the guys in person.  It is just not reasonable for me to stop any communicating with you in any of these other ways.

I therefore request that we use gamesbyemail or some alternative website instead.

edit:  Nevermind, it let me change what was written in the agreement box, so I did :)

I now have an account there and am good to go whenever it gets set up.

figured I would let you know, Mr.Underwood, They mean that you wont talk about the game itself outside of the game. It come up on the forum they have on the site. two brothers wanted to play. the admin said dont play in the same games too often, and when they do play the same games, dont always team up together.

Yeah, I figured that they meant just about game stuff.  But that's not what it said, and I couldn't agree to what it said.  For that matter, I don't even think I could agree with what it meant.  You and I are talking about the diplomacy game right now on this forum, which would go against even your interpretation.  And I think that it is unreasonable for us to commit that for the next 4-6 months while we are playing a game with each other that we won't ever mention anything about it on FB, or that the guy at my church and I will never mention anything about it in casual conversation.  That just doesn't make sense to me.

But they let me change the agreement, so it's all good :)

just out of curiosity, what did you change it to?

also, they basically meant that if you are planning something out for the game, attacks/ alliances etc, then to do it in the in game chat. it is to make sure that there is no cheating/ bugs that are found and taken advantage of.

I made 2 changes.  The first was to remove the entire second statement.  The second was to add in the word "solely" before the word "based" in the third statement.  Although it was a smaller issue, I didn't feel comfortable saying that I wouldn't make allies at all based on who I know in the game.  However it would be dumb to ever make allies purely based on that.

But if I know someone has a history of stabbing their first ally in the back by 1903, then it would be foolish for me to ignore that knowledge when making alliances.  Of course the board situation might require me to ally with that person, but it certainly wouldn't be my first choice.

So it seemed like we were on the verge of this game actually starting and then it completely disappeared.  Is everyone here still interested in playing a game, or should I just start one on my own with people who want in?

Well I feel badly starting without you if you think things will change for you.  It feels like kicking a man while he's down.  Do you think you'd be up for a game starting in the next couple months, or do you think it'll be longer than that before you're ready?

Also, is there any other way that we as a Redemption community can help you while you're going through this rough patch?

OK, well since nothing started here, and I got invited to join another game about to start, I had to go with it.

We have one open spot in that game though, and I got permission from the guy leading it to pick up someone from here.  So first come, first served....who's in?

Alright, Wyatt was the first one in and has already joined the game.  If there are 1-2 other people here who would like to be back-ups, please let me know.  I think the game is full at this point, but I've noticed that only 5 people have actually signed up for the game officially.  Maybe the last 2 will join soon, or maybe they changed their mind.  In case they decided to back out, there might be 1-2 more spots available.  Anyone want to get in line?

Sure you can put me in as a backup just let me know if a spot opens. Or if somebody quits when they have 1 center left hahaha I'll still take that country over :-)

Cool Steve.  I'll let you know the game info when a spot is free.

And for the rest of you, there would still be 1 possible spot if you're interested in being a back-up.
