What is the protocol?

Hello,
If I play the SECOND COMING while my opponent has the signet ring active and nobody catches the mistake and I get my SOG and play it to win the lost soul. We then finish the current battle and move to his turn. He then draws and is in upkeep when he realizes that signet ring would have prevent Second Coming from being able to work. What do we do? Call it for what it is a missed mistake? Or go back and undue?

Good question whose responsibility is it when a restrict ability is active?

In general, the protocol is that if the game state can be repaired, you do what you can to put things back how they should be. Obviously this is not entirely objective because so many different things can happen at which point it would be the judges decision.

In this particular example (assuming this were a tournament game) where the mistake was realized before several other actions had been taken, I would say that the Lost Soul goes back and TSC would have to stay played for no effect. If however, the mistake was not realized until many turns later when lots of actions had been taken based upon that Lost Soul being rescued, then I would say it has to stick. (I specified tournament game because most people would probably be willing to let the player retrieve TSC in a pick-up game.)

An example of this occurred at 2014 Nationals when one player played Mayhem and his opponent shuffled his hand even though he had Nazareth in his territory. The opponent ended up drawing a Lost Soul (when before he had none) and the first player was able to rescue it. Unfortunately the game state was beyond repair at that point so the play had to stand.

Good question whose responsibility is it when a restrict ability is active?

It is both players' responsibilities to be aware of any abilities that are affecting the game state.

Have you checked the REG?
Have you looked it up in ORCID?

Is this a Redemption protocol or is this a protocol you personally do at tournaments?

I just reread the tournament guide and there is nothing in it about how to fix mistakes players make during play. The official protocol is simply that the designated judge is suppose to decide how to best resolve the issue.

I like the Guardians protocol if we can fix the game to its original state then let's do it. But what's your take on it how would you rule something like this?

This has been the protocol for every tournament I have ever hosted or participated in. It's hard to have an official protocol when the "repair-ability" of a mistake is often subjective. That's why it's ultimately up to the judge.

Maybe it should just be stated in the tournament guide the judges should try to put things back to the way they were if it can be. Most of the tournaments that I've been apart of the judge said if you missed it in the phase that the card was played that's your mistake and would not undo anything even if it was just something simple.

If a judge decided to rule that way, I (as a player in the tournament) would be perfectly willing to accept that so long as the judge was being consistent.

However, even making the "same phase" ruling can be difficult because sometimes things are beyond repair even in the same phase (such as the Mayhem example I gave--the player realized what had happened as soon as he put the Lost Soul in his LoB and saw Nazareth staring back at him...). That's why I personally try to judge each individual scenario and do my best to make things as fair as possible.

And it's certainly not illegal for the TSC player to say hey, let's walk that back a notch. In TEAMS last year, for some reason, Angel of the Lord on a blocking  Serpent sounded great to everyone at the table. I passed the turn and then immediately realized my error, so we went back and re-did the battle. It went fine a little dou never hurt anybody  ::)
