I am wondering when the change to the definition of Idol took place, and that Depicts an Idol now only means that it "is an idol." I tried searching and looking through major rule changes and errata and cannot find any.
ORDIR currently says:
Depicting an Idol
This phrase has been changed to mean “is an idol”. The following Redemption® cards are impacted by this change...
Furthermore, The phrase" False religious practice now means Depicting an Idol.
A-bom is not listed in any of these sections, even though it has the identifier right on the card. And now cards like Unknown Nation do not depict an idol anymore as well?
Just wondering when this ruling change took place and how it is actually supposed to be.

I believe that was changed with the release of Revelations of John.
There was much discussion about how to handle that identifier, but the decision was made that "depicting an idol" was too subjective (after all, objects like the sun have been worshiped as idols so then any card with a sun in the image would "depict an idol.")
For the sake of simplicity, it was decided to make "depicts an idol" the same as "is an idol." While this might lead to a bit of confusion with a few cards (such as Abom as you mentioned), it will ultimately make things easier as we move forward since we're not using that phrase on any new cards.
