Title: RTS Question / Help Thread
Post by: Lamborghini_diablo on August 08, 2008, 08:25:08 PM
Ask all questions related to RTS here, and someone should gladly answer you.

This thread is an attempt to help keep this forum clean for RTS game requests, while still answering everyone's questions.

*NOTE* The first few pages may seem a little mixed up because I merged all current question threads into this one. So... just carry on with your questions.

In the card list? You are supposed to put them in the picture folder.

The Redemption Table Simulator is probably what you want. Check out the "RTS/Online Play" board for more information on that.

The cards.txt file is responsible for that. If you follow Daniel's instructions in the RoA setup thread, there shouldn't be issues. If all else fails, you can reinstall RTS and then follow his steps, but I would think that wouldn't be necessary.

I know about that, I just wanted to see the Redemption card table that was available b4 RTS.

While I don't have any information on that, I'm curious why you'd want to know about that. I would imagine that almost no one uses CardTable for Redemption anymore.

Ah. Yeah It's just that until reciently, I kinda withheld my name for a while.

However, my first order of business as new mod of this board will be to make a COMPLETE RTS install guide. It'll contain links to every file needed, and cover those who just now learned what RTS is, to those who only have the original install files, to those who have all but RoA.

You obviously didn't.

Quote
Now, once are able to host / find someone who can host… here is what you do.

Press New Game.
Pick your username at the bottom.
Pick your deck.
***If you are the host***
Make sure Host the Game is selected and press Listen. RTS will then wait to receive a signal from another person trying to connect to you.
***If you are connecting to the host***
Make sure Connect to the Host is selected. Now you must find the I.P. address of the host. If the person is hosting without Hamachi, just ask them for it and they will give it to you. If you are connecting through Hamachi, find them in Hamachi and right click their name. The option “Copy Address” should be available. Click it. Go back to the New Game window and paste the IP address into the bar. Now press Connect.

If all goes well, you should be greeted to a hand full of eight cards. Happy gaming!

Post by: Lamborghini_diablo on August 22, 2008, 03:22:12 PM
Hamachi is a Virtual Network. It creates fake I.P. adresses for everyone on the networks, so your computers can connect through those.

Its complicated to explain... just use the I.P. adresses in Hamachi and go with it.... >.>
Title: Re: RTS Question / Help Thread
Post by: Lamborghini_diablo on August 22, 2008, 03:26:03 PM
Nope, you just use the I.P. addresses it creates to connect to eachother. This helps you bypass complications with routers.

Hey guys. I'm new to RTS so I have a quick question. If I'm on "deck editor" and I have a deck loaded, how can I modify that deck? I don't know how to remove cards
Title: Re: RTS Question / Help Thread
Post by: Lamborghini_diablo on November 26, 2008, 07:45:43 PM
I explained this stuff in the guide.  :P

You can double click on a card as well to remove it from or add it to the deck.

Double-clicking doesn't work to remove a card for me either.

hmm, i was mistaken on the removing part, but I know you can double click to add it to the list.

New here.  Signed up just for the RTS.  I use to play the game irl long time ago, but there are no more tournaments and stuff around where I live (reasonably).  Anyways, I was wondering why the participating cards aren't in the deck editor?  For example I have Rhoda from a local tournament, but I can't put it into the editor.  And if I can't do that, is there a place that can give me a complete card list so I can find a replacement?

Hi,
I installed RTS a few days ago and was playing with kirk but we had some problems to view each others cards. I arranged my cards as usual on the field but he said he only saw a stack of cards.
As the game continued I realised the same was happening to me regarding his cards.
We took screenshots of this issue. Anyone knows how I can solve this problem??
thx,  ;D
Title: Re: RTS Question / Help Thread
Post by: sk on July 24, 2009, 11:22:48 PM
What screen resolutions were each you using?  I had similar issues yesterday vs Smokey because he has a much higher resolution screen than I was using at the time.  A quick change in resolution fixed the problem.

(This is why RTS tells you what resolution each of you are using when you first connect.)
Title: Re: RTS Question / Help Thread
Post by: JPEG on July 25, 2009, 12:14:44 AM
He used 1280 by 800 and I used 1440 by 900. I tried changing my resolution to match his, but he said nothing changed. Maybe I should have changed resolution and also restarted RTS to make it work.
We had a great game anyway... :)
thx guys.  ;D

Post by: sk on July 25, 2009, 12:20:20 AM
If my math is right, one of you has a 16:9 display, and the other is using 16:10.  Might be an issue there.

[edit] Just realized that I usually use 1440x900 when playing Kirk, and that works fine for us.  Perhaps a freak error?

When you log in to Hamachi, you will see a little triangle button on the bottom right of the screen. Click on it, and you can create or join a network. If you want to try it out, you can join the network I recently created (name is ProfAlstad, password is Prof). You can also view the list of networks on the Hamachi networks thread.

Once you join a network, you can see who else in the network is logged on. Right click on their name, and you will be able to chat with them. When you want to connect to them over RTS, you start a New Game, click Connect to the Host, right click on their hamachi name, click Copy Address and paste into the IP dialog box on RTS (or you can be the host and have them do the same thing--all you have to do is click host the game and then click listen, until they connect to you.

That's about it in a nutshell, if you have other questions, you can post them or try to find the answers in the help threads here.

After you add the TexP pics you should have 2084 pics.  If you have less, then you've somehow managed to delete some of your pics.  I can offer 2 possible solutions.

1 - back up your decks, uninstall RTS.  Reinstall RTS.  Add the RoA pics.  Add the TexP text file and pics.

2 - wait until I have time to zip up my entire pics folder and upload it to the web server so you can download it to replace your pics folder.

Ah, I see.  That should be an easy fix.

Open RTS.

Click on Card Graphics

Make sure there is a check next to "Show".

I have a problem with my Hamachi...I am connected to the ROOT Silver and #-Liner And Bags Of Chips networks...There are lists in each of them with names of people, almost all of which are offline. This is off because on the Hamachi on my desktop there was always someone online. Coincidence? Possibly, but what makes me think it may not be and that I have a problem is that my name is in that list and it tells me I am offline, and I played Smokey this afternoon (so clearly I am not offline) and on his Hamchi it said I was online. So to me it seems like my Hamachi shows everyone to be offline even though some of those people are online. Does anyone have any words of advice or need the problem explained in a clearer way?

You shouldn't need to reinstall.  Do you mean that the picture of the card and the card abilities don't line up?  That's really weird...

PM me with details and I'll help you fix it.

Do this:

I can't get the zip file to work.  I put it on and it says there is an error and will not open.
The error message:  this error occurred in "tmr_Timer": line number 20: (err#339) Component 'MSWINSCK.OCX" or one of it's dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid (Originated with RTS)

I try to delete to reinstall and start again from the beginning, and it gives me the prompt:  "someone or something is using the pics and cannot be deleted. (all my applications are closed so it's not me)  Also, I can't even move the folder from the desktop to program files.  It's locked where it is and will not open.

So now I can't play RTS or delete an unusable folder on my desktop.  I would like to do one or the other.   :P

EDIT:  Nevermind...I'm dumb.  (I still don't like the idea that I can't move the one folder off my desktop that has RTS Pics because "someone else is using them" but at least I got RTS working.)

Yeah, it sounds like you figured it out, but you just have to keep reading for the extra files.  :P

As far as not being able to move it, thats an issue with your computer, and I'm not sure how to fix it.

Restart.  Windows still thinks that some program is using the files.  You'll be able to delete the folder after you restart (which clears your cache).

Any version of Hamachi should work.

@Ring Wraith, you can easily put RTS on a Mac, you simply need to be running the Windows OS and not OS X, either by dual boot or virtualization.

I'm having trouble getting Hamachi started.  I click on the shortcut on my desktop for LogMeIn Hamachi, and after a few seconds an error box comes up that says "Failed to connect to the engine".  I need this working soon so I can be in the ROOT Nats Alternative Tourney  :(  Help!

@Ring Wraith, you can easily put RTS on a Mac, you simply need to be running the Windows OS and not OS X, either by dual boot or virtualization.
Six months later, I might actually do this...

Which do you recommend? I read some of the disadvantages of both, and I'm trying to be cautious, but I really don't know computers well, so I'd like some advice...

I can help you with dual booting if you'd like, even though it's a super simple process.

I prefer a dual boot, because it splits the hard drive into two separate drives, and you're not allowed to modify anything on the other drive, so you can't accidentally mess with the mac half of your drive when you're running windows. You can still read files off the other drives though.

Download this file: http://66.43.207.54/Temp/cards.txt

And place it into your RTS folder. NOT, I repeat. NOT PICS.

This link won't work... neither will the RoA one.

You downloaded the .zip, took the folder titled RTS out of that, and just opened RTS.exe within that folder? It should work.
Title: Re: RTS Question / Help Thread

It says "the cards.txt file cannot be found!" and doesn't show the field of play after I close that, or any cards whatsoever in  the deck editor.

No, it is only available for PC (not mac or linux either).

and

"The cards.txt text file cannot be found!"

Thanks.

The first error is common to all RTS users. It happens when you open the program. Click OK and then everything works fine. It's a problem with the original code.

The second error was addressed just a few posts before yours. Just scroll up to find the answer you seek.

You can run it from a shortcut, just as long as you don't drag RTS out of the folder.  :P

If you right click on the program, you should be able to create a shortcut. I know you can in Windows XP, but I dont have much experience with Windows 7 yet.

Did you download an installer? If so, that is horribly out of date, and unfortunately, nobody is around to update that. Also, I'd like to know where that link is so we can get rid of it.

Please refer to this thread for the correct file to download, it is just a .zip folder with an up to date RTS folder. Just take it out of the .zip, run the copy of RTS that is in that folder (not the one you previously installed) and you'll be good to go.

The out of date download for RTS is found here:

That is the official RTS page it's just not being kept up. On the plus side is does have the download for the plug-ins that people are sometimes missing so that's helpful.

Aparently the problem wasn't a power outage (there is a battery backup but it's only good for so long... :p). The web server that was hosting those files has had a catastrophic failure and may not be back online for some time, if ever. I'll see about moving the RTS files to a new server soon. But obviously those aren't my top concern right now. Sorry.

I just got started with RTS and have a few questions. I downloaded the setup exe. someone had created to make installing RTS easier. How can I add the new cards to this if I don't have the zip files? Also, I'm running on a mac and currently using crossover to run the installer, but can crossover run zip files?
A few other questions:
1) How do you find a game online? Where is the "lobby"?
2) Can you play alone against Computer?
3) When I put cards into play it seems I can put them anywhere, so how do you know your putting them in the right spot or not?
Thanks,
Chilaha

A few other questions:

To give a technical description of how you add cards:

RTS gets all of its card information from a file called "cards.txt" This is a giant text file that lists every card, the information to display for it, and what images to load. These images are located in "pics" folder. To update, you would update the cards.txt file with a new one, and drop the new images into the "pics" folder.  Whenever the next set comes out, I or someone else could assist you with updating if you need it.

Quote
1) How do you find a game online? Where is the "lobby"?

The "Lobby" you're looking for is located on the Redemption Connect website I linked to in my guide. However, that website will be shut down soon. More info on that here:  Link (http://www.cactusgamedesign.com/message_boards/deck-building-and-design/redemption-connect!)

Once this goes down, you will need to use Hamachi to connect to other players. For information on this, see this post here:  Link  (http://www.cactusgamedesign.com/message_boards/rtsonline-play/**the-official-redemption-table-simulator-(rts)-user-guide-**/msg185593/#msg185593)

Quote
2) Can you play alone against Computer?

No, there is no AI in RTS.

Quote
3) When I put cards into play it seems I can put them anywhere, so how do you know your putting them in the right spot or not?

RTS includes a background that serves as a general guide for where cards go. Table locations is something you pick up as you play the game. If you have a Rulebook that came with a starter deck, there is an image of the standard table layout. (This should be on the online rulebook, but the image link seems to be broken)

OK. Thanks for your reply. Also, I know the game is not Mac OSX native, but soon my crossover trial will expire and I will need to find another way to play it? Has anyone made a wineskin for it and has a link to it's download?
Or, should I just buy parallels or use bootcamp and run it on there.
Does this run on linux?

Also, I don't have any cards yet. I want to get a starter pack, but am not sure what the newest set of starter cards is, could you give me a link to the newest starter pack?
