RTS for Mac

If you haven't checked out Redemption Metagaming you should!

One of the many great things to come out of this new project by Westy and Alex_Olijar is the news that Westy figured out how to run RTS on his Mac laptop! He may not have been able to recreate the process but he was able to give me enough information that I got it working on my Mac tonight too.

Within the next week I'll either figure out a way to package up the necessary files for other Mac users or create instructions so that you too install and use RTS in OSX.

EDIT: Instructions can be found in post #13 of this thread.

Zipping it up works if they download wine. Just tried it with CG25. Don't know why I didn't mention this to anyone sooner. I had considered trying it many times but never asked anybody to actually test it.

Link may be found here.

Edit: Looks like I actually did mention it. Here. Makes me feel a bit better, but I should have still tested it out. Sorry guys!

Just wondering how this is coming along or is wine the only way to do it.

Wine is the only known way to do it. You're welcome to figure out another if you have something again wine.  ;)

I haven't put any more effort into it after Andrew made his zip file public. I didn't see any reason to duplicate his efforts.

The "Mac Version"would update the exact same way, the mac version is just the windows version running in an emulator. Not to mention the update consists of adding images and text files anyway so it's not exactly restricted to platform.

I have the updates to RTS completed except that I'm still waiting to get the graphics from Rob. Editing the text file using the OSX text editor had some bugs. That could have been partially because I'm unfamiliar with it and needed to change some settings. Booting into Windows to finish editing quickly fixed the problems I was having. I have about an hour of work left before it's 100% ready for release. The new files work fine on both the Mac and Windows side for me though, if that's what you were asking.

Hey Gabe, I tried patching the update into RTS manually by right clicking and clicking "Show package contents", then dragging pics content to the pics folder, replacing the card.txt, and dragging the decks into the main file. It didn't work. How do I update on a mac?

you may have to readd the new files as dependencies in wine, it may cheap a check sum of those files and folders that wont match after replacing them

That's probably it. I tried using the whole RTS file and then converting that through Wine, and I was able to get the program open with the updates when Winebottler automatically opens it during the conversion of the .exe file. However, after the conversion was done, it reverted to the set I had before. I tried using a new prefix (I was using the RTS one), but I'm pretty sure I need to use a Winetrick to make it work, and I'm not sure which one to use.

Prepare yourself for a long post. I'm not sure there's a short way to say this...

Westy, I tried to use your zip file and update that. I couldn't get it to run even before the update. I've aslo tried to use Winebottler and Winetricks to make RTS work to no avail. It seems to me that winetricks is missing some of the 5 components that are necessary for RTS to run. I don't recall exactly which ones I couldn't find in winetricks but I have not been successful at "bottling" a RTS.app and using it that way.

For the record, these are the 5 necessary components for RTS to run. They come pre-installed on many Windows PCs. You can download them all here.

Visual Basic 6.0 Runtimes (msvbvm60.dll)
MSWINSCK.OCX
RICHTX32.OCX
MSCOMCTL.OCX
COMDLG32.OCX

Here's what I've done to make RTS work on my Mac.

I started by installing Wine and X11. My RTS folder is exactly what you get if you download RTS.zip from these boards. It contains everything needed to run RTS (except the above files). I downloaded all 5 of the above files too. I opened each file individually using Wine.app and installed each one using the default settings. I'm a little fuzzy on this part but I seem to recall that it might have asked which Wine prefix to install them to and I chose the default for that too. After all 5 were installed I opened RTS.exe using Wine.app and it worked.

That's it. That's all I needed to do. I can still open RTS.exe anytime using Wine.app. It opens in X11 and runs well. There was a small screen size issue for a while but that seems to have gone away. It only involved me needing to resize my screen each time I opened RTS. I've also been able to add a new cards.txt and pic files to this install without any issues.

There will undoubtedly be some questions. I'll try to answer them as best I can.

Got it working, though just as an open through Wine and not as a bundled application. Thanks Gabe and CG25 for the direction.

Iamalittleking, you can download a stable version of Wine (for OSX 10.6+) from here. You won't need Winebottler, but that's what I used the last time and am still hoping I can figure out how to wrap it up all nicely again (and was part of the reason it wasn't working this time. Not a big deal though. After downloading Wine and RTS, unzip the RTS file and install Wine. Then you'll find RTS.exe in the RTS folder. Right click it and select "open with Wine". You may have to select it from your applications folder. That should work. You also may need to follow Gabe's instructions to download the other files as well. We'll help you troubleshoot any problems you'll undoubtedly have.

I'm stuck from the very beginning...  My Compy = OSX 10.6.8...

"Wine" (any version) downloads as a .exe and will only open in Textedit. What am I doing wrong?

I honestly don't remember where I originally found the wine install that I used. When I follow Westy's link I also get a bunch of .exe files that are worthless in OSX. I found what looks to be the correct version of wine here, although I have not downloaded and installed it myself since I already have it.

I'm running snow leopard...

I have RTS, X11, and Wine... however, whenever I try to open anything with wine, I get a popup that says,

"JavaAppLauncher quite unexpectedly. Click Reopen to open the application again."

All the detail info is the in "spoiler" below if it helps any, but it's pretty much computer gibberish.

Joey, I replied to your PM. Basically it seems like you've selected something related to java in your wine set up. Since RTS does not use java that seems unnecessary. I would start over from the beginning and try again. It took me several attempts to find something that worked. I've shared the steps that worked for me above.
