Guide/Info: Redemption Tabletop Simulator Workshop Mod!

For the past few months, Jonathan and I have been working on a Redemption workshop mod for Tabletop Simulator. We are finally to the point where we feel it is ready to be released for testing, feedback, and suggestions from the Redemption community!

Tabletop Simulator $20*

First of all, for those that are not familiar with Tabletop Simulator, It's basically in the title. It's a sandbox environment for playing/creating tabletop games. It's as close to a real-life experience as you can get without actually meeting in person to play.

If you want to learn more about Tabletop Simulator check out the steam shop page here: link

Installing Tabletop Simulator

1. Create a Steam account if you don't already have one: link
2. *Buy Tabletop Simulator here: link
3. Download/Install
4. If you want to disable the startup vid add -NoVid to the startup parameters in steam (right click game>properties>set launch options)

*There are often 50% sales from various sellers. you can check here for any current deals link

System Requirements/Compatibility

Tabletop Simulator is compatible with Windows, Mac OS X, SteamOS+Linux and has VR support for HTV Vive and Oculus Rift

Recommended minimum system specs are:

Memory: 4 GB RAM
Graphics: Integrated
Network: Broadband Internet connection
Storage: 6 GB available space

The steam shop page has no other system requirements listed. In my experience, Tabletop Simulator is a very lean program and should run on most hardware.

Redemption Workshop mod

This mod includes EVERY card from Original through Fall of Man as well as every Promo/Legacy Rare. Using the ORCID as a starting point for our database we developed a streamlined automated back-end system which allows us to show any card's metadata with a simple hover and provide superb image loading times (Only the images you need are loaded).

Installing/loading the Redemption workshop mod

1. log into steam in your browser
2. Go to this page: link
3. Click "Subscribe"
4. Launch the game
5. Click "Create" and then "singleplayer"
5. Click "Games" in the top left and select the Redemption mod to the right of the blue Workshop button and click "Load".
6. Now you're ready to start creating decks!

Spoiler (hover to show)

Using the Redemption workshop mod

Table Layout

All of the cards have quick spawn buttons along the top by set and card type. Simply click any button and the stack of cards will pop up after the images load (first time takes a bit longer because they are not cached yet). Along the bottom is the search area. Use the filter on the lower left to limit your search. Click "Search" to spawn the cards you want! (limit 500 for performance sake).

You can now build your deck however you would with your regular collection! Except now you have an unlimited supply of cards! ;)

Saving/Loading

When you want to save your deck: stack it up, right-click on the pile, click "Save Object", and Input the name. If you want to keep your reserve separated (which I highly suggest) you can rotate it 90 degrees, place it on top, drag-select both the main deck and reserve and then save it.

When you want to load your deck simply go to "Objects" > "Saved Objects" and click or drag the deck you want.

Spoiler (hover to show)

To save the whole table click Games>Save/Load>Create

Keyboard Shortcuts

If you want to move a whole stack of cards click and hold until the object is lifted up and then move it. If you want to remove the top card just click and drag.

A list of shortcuts can be found here: link

The simple shortcuts are:
<G> group selected objects
<F> Flip selected objects
<Scroll Wheel> Rotate selected objects
<Alt Right-Click> drop the bottom card from held deck

Spoiler (hover to show)

Searching

Right-click on any pile and then click "Search". This will open a menu on the right side where you can search by name.

Spoiler (hover to show)

Multiplayer

To start a server click Create>Multiplayer and then fill out the server name, password and max players
After loading into the server change the table and invite others to join you!

The table in the deck builder mod is also available as a standalone in case you want to use it to host games on.
You can find that workshop mod here: Link

Spoiler (hover to show)

A table specifically designed for playing Redemption is planned for the future.

Acknowledgements

Big thanks to Rob for approving the use of the Redemption logo and card images for this project. Also thanks to Roy, Dario, and Noah for giving us helpful suggestions during the development of this mod.

And finally, feel free to share any suggestions, questions or feedback you have.

Wow! Incredible! Thumbs up - awsome work!

One question: Would your streamlined automated back-end system also be able to create the necessary data for Lackey usage (in order to get both platforms supported efficiently)?

One question: Would your streamlined automated back-end system also be able to create the necessary data for Lackey usage (in order to get both platforms supported efficiently)?

Our automated backend system is designed specifically to generate a ~1.5m character file for use in the Tabletop Simulator mod. We would run into the same problem EmJayBee has already run into and that is a lack of a unique key for each card in the ORCID database to associate each card with the right data automatically. No matter what somebody would need to go in and say "this data goes with the RoA Abigail and not the Wo Abigail". I'm sure an automated system could be created that takes all of the data and somehow associates it with the right card in Lackey but I don't know enough about how the backend of Lackey works or the time to actually do it.

Other questions...

1) Is it even worth having two separate platforms? Maybe it is time to retire the Lackey plugin altogether. It is better not to fragment the online community.

2) Have you considered releasing Redemption as a premium game to allow Cactus to earn some online revenue?

I've done some playing around with the mod since the brothers announced it. While it's very appealing graphically it lacks a few key features that lackey has, namely built in game finding and an actual deck editor

Lackey has its pros, namely that it's free. I see Tabletop Simulator as a more intuitive modern tabletop game environment but lackey is designed for TCGs so it has some benefits there as well. One of the main reasons Jonathan and I made this mod was because we really wanted the 3D environment, which Lackey lacks.

While the mod doesn't have a spreadsheet style deck builder the approach a person would take while building a deck in the mod is much more, if not exactly, like you would in real life. This is one of the things I love about Tabletop Simulator, it's so freeing to be able to do anything you want with the cards. As far as finding games we will be releasing a barebones "Redemption" table that you will be able to load and that will set your "game" to "Redemption" in the server browser on the main page.

Here's an example of where that would show in the server browser:

Or one could simply make the server name "Redemption"

I don't think this is the kind of mod that would be worth buying.

I am prayerfully confident that both platforms will serve as amazing options for online gaming. Please do not remove the Lackey plugin (this old man relies on it much as I am used to using it). Lackey will remain as the free option as always. ;)

And as John mentioned earlier, Tabletop Simulator doesn't do some things Lacky does. I think Tabletop Simulator fills the gap of having a more user friendly interface for playing Redemption casually.

As someone who is very off put by just about everything about Lackey (and as someone who does not do a lot of computer anything), I will say this tool is very impressive and does a great job of grabbing my interest and making me want to learn.

As I have mentioned before, the existence of the two portals gives all a chance to pick which one fits their interest or skill in using online methods for playing the game. Peace and Blessings!
