Older sets questions / variants

1) Why was the Apostles set printed with some packs having the fish symbol facing left vs. right?

2) Similar to #1, why is there mirrored artwork in Angel Wars and Patriarchs packs?

3) Given that the Prophets set doesn't have a symbol, is there a way to quickly tell a Prophets card apart from an Unlimited/Limited?

4) And speaking of Limited vs. Unlimited, are the Limited cards the ones with the "@" in the artwork by line vs. the Unlimited do not? Or are the Limited and Unlimited the exact same looking, and the difference is between them and the A/B starters?

Thanks in advance!

1& 2 are both for collector variants. Some people like the challenge of obtaining a complete set of both "right fish" and "left fish"

3/4-- unfortunately no except if the card does not have the Cactus copyright line then you know it's a limited expansion card. The copyright line began with unlimited. So you can't really distinguish between unlimited/AB unlimited/prophets nor can you distinguish between AB limited and limited.

Cool, yeah I'm sorting through a box of older cards so that's good to know, thanks! I've never really paid attention to the variants before so I'm curious to see how many I have  8)

One more question - I'm fairly sure that the entire Apostles set was printed with the right and left facing fish symbol variants...but were 100% of the Angel Wars and Patriarch sets made in 2 variants (mirrored art) as well?

The alternate card printings is a old school thing done for collecting. It was a hip thing to do back in the day... MTG and other card games used to do this.

In addition to the mirrored cards or mirrored set symbols in Apostles, Pats and Angel Wars there are also cards with additional art like Storehouse which has one standard version and a Star Wars Tatooine version.

Another reason this used to be done was because of print sheet size. With the large scale printers that Cactus used to use there had to be X number of cards on a card sheet and if a set was small or there were extra spots on a sheet they used to print alternate art cards like the ones mentioned above to fill out the sheet.

I honestly can't remember if the entire set for Apostles and Pats were mirrored or what cards have alternate art... it's been so many years since that I just can't remember... but I'm sure that information is floating around somewhere.

I know the website Redemption California that used to be run by Bryon Hake when we had a active playgroup had a lot of information on print runs and alternate cards for older sets listed on the website.

Here is the lists page on Redemption CA that Isildur is talking about.

I believe the lists for everything except Apostles are complete, but all of the Apostles rares are also printed both ways.

One easy way to tell apart a significant portion of cards from Original and Prophets is that Original characters and enhancements typically have = strength and toughness, 6/6, 4/4, 2/2, whereas Prophets cards typically have strength and toughness that are not =, 6/7, 5/8, 5/4, 1/4, with some exceptions (8/8).

The art is also a pretty good way to tell too. Up through Warriors Cactus used exclusively original or licensed art for the game and each set had a distinct feel to it.

The Warriors set feels so unique due to the extensive art licensed for the angel and demon cards. Womens has that groovy digital art for many of the cards such as Falling Away. Originals and Prophets both make extensive used of art Rob had commissioned specifically for Redemption.

It wasn't until Apostles and Patriarchs that Redemption started to use public domain art but even then Rob still commissioned a ton of pieces from artists like Doug Gray. Kings still had that unique Redemption "feel" to it because many of the cards were reprints.

It wasn't until Priests that the game changed art direction and started using public domain art for the majority of the cards.

You guys are so knowledgeable- I appreciate it!

We really should have a centralized place where all this Redemption history & trivia is kept!

Question about the 1st and 2nd versions of the C and D starter sets.  What is the difference between the 1st edition and 2nd edition version of the Balm of Gilead, Holy of Holies, and Sound the Alarm cards?

I know the difference between the 1st and 2nd edition Mary card.

Thanks,
VJ

C/D Holy of Holies had a red or blue border. I think the blue border variant was from the first print run, which had slightly darker artifact icons.

VJ, as far as I know there is no difference between the two versions of Balm and Sound the Alarm...

Fun fact... for a number of years the second version of Holy of Holies was worth significantly more.

I think at one point it was close to $10... before the rule was added that the first Holy of Holies has the same ability and errata as the second one.

By the way was Holy of Holies ever reprinted? That would be a prettttty cooooool LGR 8)

HA! It was reprinted in Priests... still would be cool to see it as a LGR!

Thanks for the info.  I was just wondering because I saw in the TLG pricelist variations for four of the C and D cards (Mary, Balm of Gilead, Holy of Holies and Sound the Alarm).  I have both versions of the Mary card and the two Sword of the Spirit cards, so I believed I had all variations for the C and D starters.  Now I see I need a 1st print copy of the Holy of Holies.

Now that I think about it... Balm of Gilead might be reworded between the two versions or have a different border color? If you look at the images on Lackey you should be able to tell.

There are also some other variations on the evil card border colors between the two printings, that I forgot about, which Travis has listed on the price list. You'll have to compare the two decks side be side or browse through Lackey to get the complete picture, it's been so many years I don't remember exactly what changed.

The Three Lions gaming website proper doesn't give the best idea of what is different between the two printings.

VJ do you have the variations on Goshen and Kingdoms mentioned earlier in the thread? You need those for your set on C/D cards to be complete :D

When I began to collect cards back in 2003 or 2004 I purchased several C and D starter sets.  It was not until years later I realized there was two versions.  The ones I purchased were the 2nd printing.  At that time I purchased the alternate Mary and the two Sword of the Spirit cards.  Then very recently I noticed in the TLG pricelist, Travis had stated there was 106 cards in the set.
