Managing My Collection

Hey everyone, (I hope this is the right spot for this topic).

I had a question to see how other people manage their collections. I'm rolling around the idea of thinning down my collection so it doesn't take up as much space.

Currently I have all my cards in binders (yes all of them) and I have quite a few thick binders just loaded with cards. There are plenty of cards that I don't use (old school cards, no abilities/ other cards). If I have more than a T2 amount of a single card it goes into a box of spare cards to get rid of.

Anyone have any inout on picking which cards never see the light of day and which to get rid of? I know each player is different and each card has its place somewhere.

thanks in advance

So to get rid of quickly sell as one lump group but you will get the least out of this.  You could split them into groups that include a few high end then several other rares and useful cards then throw a ton of low end stuff with it too.  Or you could sell off the useful and more expensive cards individually and give the low end stuff to the Storehouse (if you are actively still playing).  The individual option brings the most money but takes a long time and there isn't a lot of people buying right now.

Well I'm still planning on playing (I was going to name this topic 'Thinning out my Collection,' but I'm not selling anything yet).

Mostly I'm looking for some advice on how to go about keeping certain cards or getting rid of others? I guess it's hard to explain. It's kind of playable cards vs non playable. Although I understand old cards come back into rotation a lot.

Are most of the cards with no abilities safe to get rid of?

Are there some cards that just have better reprints of old ones (actual reprints, not a new version of an old card: example the new Moses vs the Old Moses.)

Does that help some?

I plan to do what one of the teachers at my school did. he had binders sorted by colour, then type, then set, then he put 5 of every card in them (he had 4 kids that played) and the rest he put in a box for trading.that let him know that of a card ever became useful again, then he would have it.

I suggest keeping at least 1 copy of every card, even those no SA ones. You never know when a future card might be printed that makes use of something that was previously "useless".

Whether or not you play T2 (or think you ever will) I suggest keeping the maximum allowed copies of a card. That means 1 each of Dominants and cards with 3 or more brigades. 2 of each Lost Soul, special ability Site or two brigade card. 3 of each Artifact, Curse, Covenant and Fortress. 4 copies of any single brigade card.

Knowing the game and your play style can help you decide which of those aren't actually needed. For example, do you need to keep 3 copies of Crossbeams of the Cross? Probably not.

Boxes take less room than binders. Depending on the size of your collection a 2 row, 4 row or 5 row box should be adequate. If the cards are well organized within the box it's pretty easy to flip through them and find exactly what you need.

Now that you've weeded out all those extra cards what do you do with them? Look for opportunities to teach people to play. If that doesn't work for you then see if there's a play group that could benefit from them for the cost of shipping. If nothing else, you can always donate them to the Storehouse.

there are a few cards you may want to keep with no special abilities.. this mostly comes down to your play style though. cards like samaria sites, pharaoh's prison, egypt sites, blue damascus sites, etc

some no special ability judges are good and some cards that we toss are good cards that we just forgot about how useful they may be..

as for the toss box, donate it to a church! what a great way to spark some interest in a new play group! :)

all my cards are in binders sorted by type/brigade basically.. i made a box recently to donate to my church to get a play group going there and my kids (ages 2 and 3) got some and they love them! they want to play redemption so bad haha

Thank you everyone for the input, I'll try to go through them in the next week or so and try to shrink it down with your suggestions.

Don't want to resurrect a dead thread.  But I am now dealing with this...Thanks to several here at the forums, I have a large amount of cards and I am looking to keep at least one type in a binder so I can look and see what the card does.  Also, in a binder I am thinking I can show the others I am teaching to play what different cards do or their abilities etc.  I will keep duplicates organized in boxes, and put the number in the excel program.  Would this be a good way to organize my collection?

I initially used a three ring binder with pages but I found this to be quite impractical for my needs. Granted my collection is quite large since I'm a retailer, so that system didn't work for me but might work for you. It may be good to have some extra cards in the binder for showcasing purposes but don't put cards in it that you plan on building decks with those cards.

I found that having large card boxes (cardboard with four long rows per box), along with plastic card dividers with labels on the top of them has worked very well for me. I break the cards down into sets, then Hero, Good Enh, Villain, Evil Enh, and Misc. This system works great for my business side and for deckbuilding as I keep everything by brigade (for all of the characters and enhs) and in alphabetical order. Start with a single long box and add from there. (See below pics about what I'm referring to.) For your built decks I'd recommend Ultra Pro or BCW deck boxes. There are a wide variety to choose from ranging in size and color. If you're interested in these I sell them at low prices and have a large variety to choose from. See link below for these kinds of boxes. If you're interested in those plastic card dividers I also sell those.

I hope this helps!

The photos didn't show up...if that is what you were trying to post.  I am just a bit overwhelmed because now I have a huge shoebox full that someone graciously gave me plus the ones I ordered.  So I am a bit overloaded. :o   Not sure where to begin, but I suppose I gotta start just organizing.  I really mainly want to put them in the Excel sheet so i know what I have and how many for the play group purposes.

I did not realize the Ultra Pro will work with these cards?  I was thinking it was mainly only the Dragon Shield.

Dragon Shield is just one type of sleeve for cards. Ultra Pro makes some as well as BCW and many other companies. The deck boxes will fit any trading cards, sleeved or not.

If you end up with several thousand+ cards it can take quite a while to completely sort them (set, color, type, etc) as people suggested but I think it pays off in the long run, if you are going to be doing deck building, playing, etc.  Just a suggestion but since you talked about getting kids interested in the game this might be a good opportunity to allow them to do a lot of that work with maybe packs or some of those cards as a reward.  It would save you a ton of time and I know that I would have jumped at that opportunity as a kid to get new cards.

P.S. if it is your 2 year old that helps by dumping your 4k box on the living room floor and mixing them up then the saving time part does not apply from what I've heard, not that I have any personal experience with that  ::)

I have "resorted"  ;D to simply organizing the newer sets and simply tossing older cards into boxes (by set). I do keep one box with an assortment of older cards that I might use in decks sorted by type and brigade but the rest I just store in bulk boxes. If I come across an older card I need, I end up having to do a little digging, but it means I'm not constantly sorting and trying to keep things completely in order.

I'm the major OCD organized dude!  I have 3 binders displaying one of each card, one binder is heroes and enhancements, one is evil characters and enhancements, and the third is everything else.  All of those are sorted based on type, then color, then alphabetical.  Then I have my "deck building" collection in two different places.  My collection that I build decks with and use on a (somewhat) regular bases are in cases (from Lowes or Home Depot, for nails, bolts, etc.), then the collection of cards that I never use in deck building are in the clear 500 card cases on my book shelf at home.  As far as cards to for my playgroup.  I have them in 3 ring binders in the 9-card sleeves.  I have 5 of each that they can trade/buy from and any extras are stored in the big white 5,000 card size cardboard boxes.  And of course I have all of it inventoried on my excel/google sheets that way I know what I still need for me or my playgroup, or what I have to trade away.

Yeah, so far I have 2 binders. One good brigades and other stuff and one evil brigades and lost souls.  Grouped by brigade and character and enhancement cards.  Its not alphabetical. I just can't bring myself to it yet. Plus a big shoeboxe full of cards by brigade.

Hate to bring up an old topic, but I am thinking of re-organizing.  I have two of each set from at least CoW to current.  I have the 12 pocket binders that are zipper bound.  Thus allowing for a better storage...anywyas.  I am thinking of taking my second sets and re-orginizing those into brigade, heroes, enhancements etc.  About how many pages would I need and how big should the binders be to hopefully keep all the good together in one and all the evil together in another?

When organizing according to brigade, hero, enhancement etc...when you come to the dual characters and enhancements or ones that are either good and evil and even the dominants, how do you categorize those?

Personally, I struggle with this question as well.

However, I currently sort my cards by brigade with each set starting with evil cards in alphabetical order of brigade. Enhancements first then ECs. (Black Enh, Black EC, Brown Enh, Brown EC, Crimson Enh, etc.) Then I put evil fortresses and curses.

Same for Good cards

Then comes neutral. Artifacts, Sites, Dual Alignment.

IMO I wish there was a better method/organization of the dual alignment since I might look for them on offense or defense.

So here is how I organize my "play boxes" (the boxes I carry the cards I actively play with), and every card is in alphabetical order.

Dual-Alignment Dominant, Good Dominants, Evil Dominants
Dual-"Type" cards (Leviathan, RoJ Seals, etc), Dual-Alignment Characters, Dual-Alignment Enhancements
Artifacts, Covenants, Curses
Cities, Fortresses, Sites, Lost Souls
Blue Heroes, Blue Enhancements
Clay Heroes, Clay Enhancements
continue with Gold, Green, Purple, Red, Silver, Teal, White, Multi-Color
Black Characters, Black Enhancements
continue with Brown, Crimson, Gold, Gray, Orange, Pale Green, Multi-Color

I could easily see moving the Multi-Color stuff to the beginning of the character/enhancements, but this is how I started by sorting when there wasn't a whole lot of those cards around, and haven't ever felt like going back and changing it.

Ultimately, it is up to you, do whatever makes sense in your head that way you know where they are.  You can ask Brian J. & Josiah B. they asked to borrow cards at Nationals, and I would pull them out almost as quickly as they would ask for them because I knew exactly where I kept them.  That is really all that matters, so take advice but do what works for you.
