Cloud of Witnesses vs. Revelation of John

Hey all,

As I stated in my "I'm back' post, I have been out of the game for some time. My birthday is coming up in 2 weeks (I'll be 22!) and my grandparents have agreed to buy me a box. I have seen here tons that CoW and RoJ are quite possibly the two best expansions to ever come out, so my choice is between the two. If you were in my position, which box would you get and why? Thanks in advance for all the help!

The Seoncd Coming is in the CoW box I would lean that way if you don't have any of the new stuff. You should also shop around on the boards you may be able to get more bang for your buck by buying singles you know you want. You may also be able to get a box at a discounted price from some vendors.

Id go RoJ as NJ is a substitute for TSC but there is no good one for Three Woes. Probably can draft a nice demon defense with RoJ  and Silver offense too after a box, whereas cloud is more scattered brigade-wise. But either way picking one over the other because of the big ultra rare (TSC or 3Woes) is probably not best as odds are you won't draft one.

You're able to build pretty great decks using mostly RoJ cards. Not exactly so with CoW.
I am not talking about T2 unless I am explicitly talking about T2. Also Mayhem is fine now somehow!

I would agree...CoW helped a lot of different themes by giving them a handful of upgrades. RoJ introduced the Martyr theme and the Revelation Angel theme so those decks can pretty much be made entirely with RoJ cards if needed.

CoW currently has more valuable singles, but RoJ is hardly set in stone. As a whole, RoJ has better URs. Still, Second Coming. Point - CoW

In terms of playability, pretty much all of the cards from both sets are playable, but RoJ has less "filler" cards. Point - RoJ

Considering other cards in the pack, RoJ's got CoW beat with tin cards and Priests. Those are better for decks. Point - RoJ

Honestly, if you're starting new, RoJ's probably the best way to get better cards. If you've already got a collection, CoW will fill in spots to make your old decks better.  It really depends on what kind of deck you're trying to make. If I were in your position and didn't know what kind of deck I wanted to make, I'd flip a coin. If I were in my position, I'd go RoJ, mainly because I already have the best cards from CoW. Still, Second Coming will be the king UR for awhile.
If you were to go on a trip... where would you like to go?

I personally think
The Second Coming > Three Woes
Three Woes > Broken Covenant
Broken Covenant > Michael
Michael > Red Dragon
Red Dragon > Eternal Inheritance

My overall UR rankings from the last 2 sets
1. TSC (Power, Playability, Versatility 1)
2. 3W (Power, Playability, Versatility 2)
3. Broken Covenant (Power 5, Playability 3, Versatility 3)
4. Michael (Power 4, Playability 4, Versatility 5)
5. Red Dragon (Power 6, Playability 5, Versaility 4)
6. Eternal Inheritance (Power 3, Playability 6, Versatility 6)

If you switch Michael and RD this list is golden. IMO I think Michael is by far worse than RD.

I wouldn't say he's FAR worse, but RD is just so much more splashable, which makes him better IMO.

IMO Michael is stronger in his main theme (Revelation Angels), but Red Dragon can be splashed in a variety of defenses making him more versatile.

Maybe this is a difference between T1 and T2, but I'm not convinced Second Coming is better than 3 Woes, although I admit, I'm not entirely sure what 3 Woes will do to the T2 landscape just yet. But Second Coming is almost always a rescue (usually the best use of it will be to recur Son of God for a second use, but it has the added benefit of being used effectively in other situations that probably make up for it's weakness to Hezekiah's Signet Ring and banishing Son of God from discard pile (that's also somewhat mitigated by Covenant of Prayer))

Three Woes has the ability to disrupt your opponent's strategy long term, on either offense or defense, which could be more valuable than an extra rescue.

But these are just my thoughts on the cards.

My advice for a box to get? Probably Revelation of John. I'm not convinced it's better than Cloud of Witnesses, but it gives you access to reserve accessing cards and what I think is the best Multicolored site in the game, also there are likely less Revelation of John cards available so it may have a trading advantage vs Cloud.
If you are reading this signature, thank a physicist.

The only reason to to not have TSC is to play NJ instead. You can't just not run either unless you have a very abnormal gameplay (Such as John's greek watchful deck). You definitely still run 3 Woes in addition though you just cut something besides TSC.

RoJ also supports NJ.
They seem pretty lame as fighters maybe we should challenge them to a dance off or a redemption game

I'd say with a silver revelation offense, it might be better to run nj. Swap it for whatever card you want in your reserve with angel from the altar, and when you want it back, jut go in with the nj site.
