You only have to host one local before hosting a district. From the tournament guide:
Quote
A host must gain experience with lower level tournaments. (i.e. you must host a local before you can host a district, etc.)

Thanks! That is what I thought but a friend thought it might be more than one time.

The requirement used to be two, I didn't realize that that had changed.

I believe so. Each level requires the host to have hosted at least one tournament of the previous level. Hosting Nationals might require more but I've never put in to host one so I'm not sure, lol.

So to host a district you have to host a local.  To host a state you have to host a district.  To host a regional you have to host a state.  To host a national you have to host a regional.

The only thing is that for State or higher, if multiple people put in for it then it is up to either Rob or the people that put in for it to agree with where it will be.  Until last year I was the only host in TN, so I've always done the state tournaments.  And regionals has been going every other in TN or KY, because Mark U./Brian J. and me have agreed to do that.  Nationals has to be approved my Rob.  You can put it for it at every year but unless Rob approves it you are never going to get it.

So if only one playgroup puts in for a certain state then do they automatically make it?

Now I kind of hope that my playgroup is the only one, then we can host states!

So who do we talk to if we want to get VA in that cycle?

You need to complete the applications, starting with the first local tournament. You can get applications and Host instruction guides on this page:

here's how it goes:

you have to host a local before district, district before state, state before regional, regional before national.

from my understanding though, not sure if things have changed since the last time the tournaments were updated but there is it
