Megabus! Megabus!

You should be able to get from Minneapolis to Houston for $21 (one way)
Leave Monday at 5:20 pm
Arrive Wednesday 3:15 pm

Megabus only scheduling through mid-June so this assumes no early-bird price/schedule changes when we get to August.

Travis,

Is there an option to stay at the church?

Yes, as far as we know --- Travis and I did rounds when I visited the church, and he showed me the proposed sleeping rooms. Peace and Blessings.

There are 7 official categories (T1-2P, T1-MP, T2-2P, T2-MP, Sealed Deck, Booster Draft, and Teams) that must be offered. They're offered 2 to 3 per day - the schedule isn't out yet.

Iron Man and Type Half are side categories that are not official and are played in downtime or in the evenings, if someone is running them.

Iron Man is just pickup games of T1 2P. Each player gets 10 scoring cards. If you win, you get one of the other player's cards. The player with the most cards at the end of the weekend is the winner.

Type Half is T1 with different deck building rules.

Cube draft and garage sealed? What are they?

Cube draft is a booster draft with pre-pulled cards.  So something like the 16 (this is a guess) best heroes and enhancements from each color.  Then some of the most useful artifacts, fortresses, sites, lost souls, etc,  Each pack has 15 (randomized) cards in it and you pick 4-6 packs then draft like a booster draft.  The biggest difference is once all the cards have been drafted you build your decks and play 1 on 1 games instead of multi-player games.

So basically it is booster draft with only good cards, and you play 1 on 1 instead of multi-player.

Garbage Sealed is each person gets 3 unlimited & 3 prophet packs (it could be 4 of each, I can't remember), and opens them and builds a deck with the cards they pulled and 7 generic lost souls.  You do not get to trade cards, so what you open is what you have to choose from.  It is basically a very nostalgic game, paying homage to the original days of Redemption, and a really fun way to get rid of all the old packs no one wants anymore.

Question: do the Nats ever have brand new players show up? Like folks that have a limited number of cards available to them?  Would there be a problem with donating cards to said players?

People borrow cards all the time, so not at all. I'd recommend starting in a sealed category though.. Constructed is obviously pretty difficult for people who have never played before at nats, but there is definitely comparable lower level competition. Also, Type A is a thing now for kids 12 and under.

Type A, not sure where to find more information on it but I know it's for 12 and younger with no RNRS points. (the no RNRS points requirement could have changed but not sure)

Made some revisions to the OP so please take note of the Official Hotel and Event Schedule. We will be playing Booster Draft as a 2-Player category at Nationals this year so you may want to play Booster in that way leading up to Nationals in order to prepare for the difference in game play and strategy.

May I ask, why the break in the traditional Friday spot for T1-2P?

Post by: uthminister [BR] on May 06, 2018, 12:18:15 AM
No you may not...just kidding.  :P

We wanted to put all the traditionally 2-player categories on Thursday. Putting the Booster Draft 2-player (arguably the most popular category at Nationals opposite the least popular category) on Friday which is usually the best attended day of Nationals. Teams, Sealed, and Type-2 Multiplayerr on Saturday in order to have a Type-1 option every day with Teams being considered Type-1.

Generally we are taking our experience hosting Nationals before and putting it to good use.

I personally love that idea. If you want to create a thread about possible t-shirt ideas, I would be willing to move forward with that idea. Once you have ideas, maybe create a poll and come up with a top two or three t-shirt ideas and we will get them printed for sale at Nationals with enough interest.

Garbage draft sounds similar to an event that was ran each year in later years by Steve Braun which he called Retro Sealed.  Each person got an A or B starter deck, and there choice of three packs that they could pick from Unlimited and Prophets, and then would compete like normal sealed deck.  (This happened after A and B had been sufficiently retired.

Phone/Gadget Charging POOL Wanted:
We request all who have multi-USB charging devices as well as other types of charging stations + power strips, to share theirs at the venue. We are planning to set up a charging central pool (cooperative). Simply leave your contraptions plugged in at the charging central each morning when you arrive at the tourney (for the whole day) and bring back 'home' with you. We truly appreciate your effort.

There is a amazing category called Type A for kids younger than 13 years old. It's basically Type 1 2-Player. In order to qualify to play in the event, player must never have historically won an official tournament in any level (Local, District, State, Regional, National).

Travel mercies for everyone! It will be worth it! Peace and Blessings.

We will be using Top Cut as in Ohio complete with the viewing room and live commentary. I had considered doing a consolation bracket in which players could play a couple more games. We will be offering quite a few after hours and during breaks types of play so everyone will get all the Redemption they can handle for the weekend. With that being said, I am certainly open for y'all to share your thoughts.

Roy, I have 2 - 6 Plug multi chargers I can bring to help you guys out!

Wonderful!!! Thanks! I knew you will always be there for us brother! Travel mercies to your group especially if you are travelling by land. See y'all soon! Peace.

On the Cactus page it lists TEAMS as being $10 for the entry fee...is that $10 per team or per player?

I am almost certain that it's $10 per team.  Just confirmed it by seeing on the Nats registration site that the individual gets charged $5 fee for teams. Let us await Travis' concurrence.

Thanks for the inquiry Justin.

Peace and Blessings.

That's what I thought and it matches the other open categories ($5 per player) but just didn't want anyone to be confused.

It appears as though the interest level will not be enough to invest in shirts or playmats at this year's event. We will still be doing a playmat in the near future, but not in time or associated directly with the National tournament this year.

WARNING: Triple Post

So after I made the previous announcement, several of you reached out to me directly and presented a few options for the playmat to be produced. I have submitted the order and will be receiving 32 playmats with 9 being reserved for the winners of each category (Nationals Evens only, not RNRS). That will give me 22 playmats for me to sell to the general public (if you are keeping track, yeah, I am keeping one for myself). They will be selling for $25 a piece at Nationals and will be featuring the artwork for the upcoming Seasonal Promo, Majestic Heavens.

With some recent tournament issues as precedents, we cannot stress enough the requirement for personal hygeine, with emphasis on BO prevention. Please make sure to read the Travel etc thread's OP that includes the reminder below:

SHOWERING/HYGIENE:
Showering and proper hygiene are a daily requirement for all participants for obvious reasons. For church crashers and campers, there is a free public shower facility CONVENIENTLY located at Spring Creek Park right across from the church. Please make every effort to plan a shower sked. We will also have a couple of shower tents outside the building for urgent use.

Thanks and Godbless.

TLG is excited to be the official vendor at Nationals this year. We will have a good inventory of supplies (sleeves, boxes, tokens, etc.) as well as all the Redemption product available.

There will also be plenty of FREE coffee on hand as well.

Yes, we are going to try our best to successfully make that happen. You will know by the end of Wednesday if the setup is successful to enable live coverage of Top Cut. Prayers up!

Nats attendance has traditionally been lower in areas that are not central. California in 2009 had 85, NY in 2013 had 75.

I also heard of some people/groups that had planned to attend and had to cancel at the last minute.

While it's great to have a huge turnout at Nationals, it's still possible to have a great tournament with a smaller turnout, which I believe is what happened this year.

Yup, perhaps not the number of players at Nats 2018 but the hearts of ALL the players that attended.
