Title: 2012 Florida State Tournament
Post by: YourMathTeacher on June 04, 2012, 06:13:02 PM
2012 Florida State Tournament
June 29th and 30th

This year's Florida State tournament will once again be held in Central Florida. This year we will be meeting directly at Cornerstone Baptist Church (location of last year's Southeast Regionals). Directions to the church are located at the bottom of this post.

This year we will be having five events: T1-2P, T1-MP, T2-2P, TEAMS, and Sealed Deck. I will post a schedule of events soon, but I would like some feedback from players. We will be starting at 8pm on Friday night, June 29th, and at 9am on Saturday, June 30th. We may need to double up categories if time becomes an issue, so please consider that in your feedback.

The pastor has given us the green light for a lock-in for those interested in playing other games after Friday night's category. I have Settlers of Catan (with all expansions), LotR TCG, or other board/card games. We can also bring laptops for massive multiplayer Civilization III or (if multiple people bring laptops) Age of Empires II (or Star Wars Galactic Battlegrounds). I have two discs for each of those games. Bring your own discs if interested in really making it massive (I'll bring a router).

Unlike Southeast Regionals last year, we will not be playing any official categories during the overnight hours. You are welcome to bring a sleeping bag and sleep in the youth room (the room in the back with the blacklights). If you are interested in staying in a hotel, there are a plethora of hotels within 15 miles of the church, since the church is only 15 miles from Disney. Please check with me if you want hotel information, since some of the hotels on Route 192 are quite run down. I'll let you know which ones are safe.

Directions to the church:
Cornerstone Baptist Church currently has temporary housing at The Island Club West clubhouse in Davenport, Florida. It is located just off US 27 midway between I-4 and HWY 192,  at the end of Sand Mine Road.  Head west on Sand Mine (located behind Publix) – Island Club West will be on the right, turn left into the clubhouse parking and pass under the archway. The church meets in the clubhouse on the left hand side.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

There are a few tidbits that I need to mention:

1. There is little to no cell phone reception at the church. Be sure to bring a charger for your cell phone, otherwise your battery will die searching for a signal.

2. Please bring food/snacks to share, and money for meals. We can buy pizza from Hungry Howie's as usual, but I cannot afford to feed everyone.

3. If you are playing Sealed Deck, you may bring your own G/H starters and/or unopened booster packs to reduce/eliminate the extra cost for that event.

FYI, there is a one-time entry fee of $5. Sealed Deck will be an extra $10. Bring money for food, or just bring plenty to eat with you.  ;D

I don't have a laptop, will there be a table for me to use my desktop?

Is there any tvs there for gaming? Such as brawl?

Signed the fool who isn't gonna sleep.

The Florida State Tournament arrives in Central Florida one week from today! Please let me know asap if you plan to do Sealed Deck, since there is a ten player limit.
Well, if T2-2p and TEAMS are simultaneous on Fri night (as per the other thread (http://www.cactusgamedesign.com/message_boards/official-tournaments/central-florida-tournaments/msg485297/#msg485297)), then I'm going to assume that T1-2p will be run by itself on Sat (since probably everyone wants to play in that).

So that leaves T1-mp and Sealed.  If you plan on running those simultaneously on Sat, then my daughters and I will probably just play T1-mp.  However if you run all 3 events on Sat separately, then at least Alecia and I would probably play Sealed Deck in addition to T1-2p and T1-mp.  Katrina is not likely to play Sealed regardless.

Also, on the side games front, I'll probably be bringing either "Star Wars: Epic Duels" or "Shadows Over Camelot" with me if people would be interested in getting in a board game on Fri night late.

I was indeed planning on having T1-2P alone.

So that leaves T1-mp and Sealed.

This is going to be the TBD one. I was hoping to wait until I had exact numbers of players before deciding. I would like to run both separate, but if we get a good turnout, then I may have to run them simultaneously. If it's OK, I would say to bring money/supplies for Sealed Deck, but be aware that you may not actually play them.

Also, on the side games front, I'll probably be bringing either "Star Wars: Epic Duels" or "Shadows Over Camelot" with me if people would be interested in getting in a board game on Fri night late.

We have Epic Duels, too. I have never played Shadows over Camelot, so that might be interesting to learn.

For those planning on attending the Florida State tournament, I just found out that we are going to have a very special guest. Her name is Debby. She runs a Syrian defense and especially likes to play Deluge of Rain.

It took me a moment to figure out why you would call out a player's deck like that.  Then I got it.

I'm hoping that you're just being funny here, and that this storm won't be affecting the tournament any.  Am I right?

South FL won't be participating in States this year. Everyone is slightly interested. Maybe Regionals? Sorry to let anyone down, I'm just the messenger here. Thank you Tim for your faithful service to the Redemption community.

I see how it is.  All your guys are scared cause KY is going to be represented, so they're chickening out and waiting until Regionals after I'm gone.  I understand their fear.  I won't take it personally :)

Just in case anyone doesn't know me well enough to realize it, this message is entirely tongue in cheek.

There was a very real possibility that Debby would still be mulling around in the Gulf during the week and then hit Central Florida on Friday. However, she appears to have taken a turn to the northeast and has picked up speed, so she should be gone before Friday after all.

Not to mention, all she has done is throw water.

now I get it, lol. Debby, haha. No wonder we're getting so much rain down south too.

Sorry Prof that the guys are yellow belly chickens.  :P It would of been an honor.

What is the agenda Friday evening. I'm from NJ on vacation and trying to decide whether or not to attend Friday evening

We will likely hold T2-2P and TEAMS simultaneously on Friday night starting at 8pm. Be forewarned, none of my playgroup has a T2 deck, and if they tried to make one last minute, it would likely be a 105-card deck with no duplicates  ;) . The only reason I hold T2 events is because Rob requires it. I am hopeful that someday he will drop that requirement.

After those categories are done, we will be having a lock-in at the church to play non-Redemption games.

Question: Will anyone else be bringing the computers? I am more to willing to bring mine, but if we aren't going to use them I rather not.

I will be bringing the wii with some games though regardless :D

I have 1000s of cards, but it depends on what you need. I need to reiterate that if you plan to play T2-2P, you may be the only participant.

Do you have AoEII or Star Wars Battlegrounds discs? If not, then there will be no need for you to bring a computer. There is no internet access at the church.

I have SW Battlegrounds.

If I can find it...

Also YMT can you bring my attacktix? Those would be fun.

That being the case I'm not sure if I can borrow what I need to build two decks. If I built two type 2 decks and brought my daughter do you think that we would be the only type 2 participants?  Also if I needed to contact you tomorrow are you working and/or when would be the best time to reach you?

You're asking this of someone with my memory?     I'll...  try....

That is a very real possibility, but I can make no guarantees since I get surprise visitors every once in a while, especially at major tournaments.

Also if I needed to contact you tomorrow are you working and/or when would be the best time to reach you?

I will be home all day Friday until about 7:30pm. I work from my computer for Florida Virtual School. You can call me at (352) 243-0493.

Anyone coming to Florida States either today or tomorrow, please remember to bring snacks and drinks to share, as well as prepared meals for the weekend. If you are not bringing your meals, please bring money for doughnuts (breakfast) or pizza (lunch), unless you are planning on going out for either. Also, please eat before you come on Friday night.

He did not. Type 2-2P was cancelled. As I said before, no one in my playgroup plays T2. I am still hopeful that someday Rob will drop the requirement of T2-2P at major tournaments, or at least for District level tournaments. I hate wasting my money on a category that never gets played down here.

It was a great tournament experience, which is normal for YMT's tourneys that I've ever attended.

TEAMS was really fun teaming up with Josh, who has been a kindred spirit of mine for years with his love of defense.  We had a lot of success with our decks, and all three games were really fun for both teams, with a lot of laughter from everyone.

T1-2p was also a really close event.  After the first round, I was in 2nd, but had a tough match which ended up dropping me to 4th.  After the third round I moved back up to 2nd, and had to play Josh Kopp for the championship.  I was blessed with the cards I needed to get the win in a game that was shorter than expected, but still contained some great battles.  In one battle:
- I played a battle winner
- Josh negated it
- I played another battle winner
- Josh negated it
- I looked over at my Unholy Writ
- Josh Destruction of Nehustan'd it before I could use it
- I played a card to draw some help, and played a final battle winner
THAT was FUN!

T1-mp was also very close.  It is typically my strongest event, but things didn't break my way this time.  I was able to slip into the championship round (in 3rd place at the time), but then couldn't finish things out, and ended up dropping down to 6th.  I was proud of my daughter Alecia for finishing in 4th in this event though doing better than her Dad :)

Sealed deck was an interesting event.  I pulled a Judas Iscariot and a couple of black brigade High Priests, which naturally my opponent wanted badly (since he had the crimson and black deck).  I was torn between keeping the UR simply for trade value, or handing it to my opponent for some really nice cards that would increase my chance of winning Sealed deck.  I decided to play for the win, and traded, hoping for the best.  It kind of worked.  I won all but one game (against Andrew Goeller), and took all the available LSs in that one game.  However, my opponent had severe LS drought and my defense eventually wore out, leading to a 5-3 loss, dropping me to 3rd in the event overall.  I was proud of Andrew for beating me, as he had actually called ahead of time as the event started.

It was also my daughter Katrina's first tournament at that level, and she had a great time.  She took some LSs, and had many fun games.  I am proud of her for having such a great attitude as she continues to learn this game :)

Just one question Mark...no invite?

ok two...WHERE ARE YOU ERIC LARGENT!?
Answer 1:
a (assuming you mean why didn't I invite you to the FL State tourney) - I didn't know for sure until the last couple days beforehand that I would be going to the FL State tourney.
b (assuming you mean why haven't I invited you to the EC Regional tourney in 2 weeks) - You are TOTALLY invited, and I REALLY hope you will come.
c (assuming that you mean why did I show up to the FL State tourney without an invite here on the boards) - I happened to be in FL at the time, and Tim graciously invited me in person

Answer 2:
I have no idea where Eric "AWOL" Largent is, but I sure would love it for him to show up at EC Regional and TN Nats as well :)

Good to see you here on the boards.  You've grown a lot as a player in the short time that I've known you, and I look forward to seeing how far you go with this great game.  Hopefully I'll get to see you at Nats next month :)
