Title: Redemption cards a flight security risk?
Post by: sk on June 20, 2010, 05:04:20 AM
While passing through security at LAX, my brother was pulled aside to go through some additional security checks.  Apparently, he was fine walking through, but his carry on bag was screaming all kinds of warnings at the TSA workers.  They began to dig though his suitcase, and pulled out his Bible (in a zippered case, which he forgot to pack without the case), his shaver, and, scariest of all... his Redemption cards?!?

After quite a bit more checking, they definitely focued on his 300-card box of Redemption cards.  They ran some sort of test on the bag, but after re-running the three suspicious items through the machine, they told my brother that it is "probably the cards."  Whether it was the sleeves or the cards themselves (dad and I got our cards through just fine, but most of his defenses are TxP heavy and the foils might've been what caused the problems), we don't know.  But it sure was awesome/scary/hilarious to see him being questioned like the suspicious character he is :)

... Ps, if you'd like to meet and play a game or two of Redemption in the Columbus area next Sunday or Between July 3rd and 9th in the Washington DC area, let me know.

Ha!  I'm glad your experience has been ... memorable ... so far.  :)  Keep us posted on any other interesting developments.

Kurt's gonna get a kick out of this one. *runs to tell Kurt something he can tease Andrew about*

Same thing happened to me leaving MN. It's because the tightly packed cards throw things off with the sensors, looking like some compound they didn't know when it was. We will be in Ohio from the 30th till the 5th, but if you want to get together around DC afterwards PM me. Where you staying in the DC area?

That makes me want to take a plane over bus to Boston. That'd be awesome to see happen :3.

You might use the cards to hack the plane!

I let Andrew know the story would get to Kurt. :)

@TechnoEthicist: We will be staying near Reagan airport on the Virginia side.  We plan to drive up to Baltimore at least once, but as we only have set plans through the 4th, we can probably meet whenever it would work for you.

Road trips are especially fun when you're squished in the back and the ride is more than 6 hours long!

How about a 24 hour road trip while squished in the back of a van that has been packed smuggler style? Still sound fun? -_-

When did they start making these?  are they fuel efficient? or do they have some V8 gas slugging powerhouse under the hood? I know it isn't Government Motors making them. Is it a subsidiary of Cactus Game Designs? You know...Cactus Automobile Designs. I would like to have a sports model.......maybe similar to Bumble Bee or something.......  ;D

Godspeed,
Mike

Stumbled across this old thread and figured I would share my experiences...

Between this summer and last summer I've flown to 3 Redemption tournaments (6 flights total).

1. MN to CA -- looked through everything.
2. CA to MN -- looked through everything (I think--this one I don't remember exactly).
3. MN to Nashvillle -- didn't check anything.
4. Nashville to MN -- didn't check anything.
5. MN to Houston -- didn't check anything.
6. Houston to MN -- looked through everything.

I'm tempted to someday fill an entire suitcase with decks in deck pouches and see if they open every single one.  ::)

Back to back flights for nationals my decks get checked. I politely let them know that they have already been deck checked by John E and are tournament legal.

I've taken cards on a flight once and they made me open all the tins and deck boxes and thumbed through it all. My guess is that they can't see through the cards/tins if they're packed too tightly or something like that and they're checking if you're hiding something between them.

I was actually a bit disappointed they didn't check my decks on the way down to Nationals...who knows, maybe if they had, they would have mentioned that I didn't have enough LS gen in my T2 2P deck and I don't time-out that first and last game... ::)

What I find interesting is that they seem to completely ignore the bag of glass stones I bring for T2 counters. I mean I'm thankful, but I guess they don't think I'm smuggling gems or anything...  :o

I got ruthlessly checked at tsa on the way to nats. The lady check all my stuff super slow and ended the search by dropping a box full of small dice on the floor. On the way back however, I didn’t get checked at all...  :dunno:

One year Bryon, Kurt and I got searched by TSA (I think this was Missouri Nats?) because we had tins in our luggage. We each had like 10 tins and had our bags thoroughly rummaged through while they were trying to figure out what the tins were.

The great John Earley got the TSA treatment on our flight home from Houston. It was only a 550 count box. TSA didn’t bat an eye at the tube of toothpaste in my bag which was over the legal limit and not in a separate baggie.  ::)
