Now that PoC is out, how would a musician deck be built?
« on: April 16, 2019, 04:00:58 PM »

Hey all,

I have been running a musician type-2 offense for the past few years, but now that PoC is finally out, it has lost much of its competitiveness. I am unsure of how to use them now, even though I think they can still be powerful. I have always felt that needed to be paired with another them instead of being solo.
Recently, I thought that having a prophet centered offense with the recurrability of musicians might be what works. I think an Isaiah focus for enhancements and green musicians could be the ticket.
If anyone has suggestions for this theme, and would be open to showing some combos, I would greatly appreciate the help!

I think Musicians are still plenty good, but their weakness is that players have (for the most part) realized that as long as they work around Music Leader (which is not easy, but still doable) then the Musician offense can be incredibly slow. In games I've played against you and others who run Music Leaders, I just realized I have to pick my spots to search and draw. By using things like Woes or Golden Calf to draw and search as much as I can while ML is negated, and then slow down when he's not negated, I can use speed and the Musicians won't keep up.

I think you're correct that Musicians will still be best when paired with another theme, whether that's Martyrs as many people have done, or a different theme like Prophets (OT & NT). I think there's some very intriguing combinations with Green/White having David, Miriam, John, Daniel, Two Witnesses and Moses. Cards like Nunc Dimittis, Search and even Provisions would work to speed up a Music/Prophet deck.

I also tried to pair Musicians with green Prophets but with no success yet (well I am not quite a deck building genius though  :)). Speed and consistency was missing compared to the ML attempt.
Nunc Dimitis for me felt still "too slow" and not worth putting in deck or reserve for getting one card (well the underdecking part must not be underestimated!). But in addition The Tabernacle can be used (also a nice place for keeping your BoC). And indeed: PoC Miriam provides another possibility to get hands on your cards.
Maybe even a build combined with Red Warriors would be possible when thinking of The Mighty Warrior?!

@The Guardian: Which John, Daniel and Moses do you think of? I guess Daniel Promo; John, the Revelator and PoC Moses?

If you have enough Exodus Heroes to warrant using The Exodus this deck is  able to take advantage of a loophole in the current rules that will allow you to make 2 rescues in the same battle.

Step 1: Use Lamb's Righteousness to make a rescue.
Step 2: Play Words of Encouragement to ITB (including the restriction of Lamb's Righteousness) and play The Exodus to make a second rescue.

That's 2 rescues in one battle, combined with 2 Dominant rescues (SoG/TSC/NJ) and you only need to finagle one more for a T1 victory.

Enjoy this combo that Josh came up with while we were play testing the Exodus offense. My guess is that we will adjust the rules pertaining to rescue to keep game balance with 1 rescue by a Hero in battle per player per round.

Black defense with PoZ, lot's daughters, and Idols of Caanan...? to keep Jonah off the table. Then Foritfy Site can destroy some of their Music Leader counters.  Similarly, Stalks of flax, golden calf and shame lost soul are all great counters to Jonah as well.

Another theme that I could think of pairing them with was Rahab and other O.T. Women. Tabernacle can get back Scarlet Line, and if could be combined with Provisions or similar CtB cards it could facilitate some good rescues. It would also support Stalks of Flax and leave an opponent without counters or even without their primary heroes like Isaiah, Ezekiel, etc.

I was a little skeptical of this idea, but dang, looking at the roster of OT women this year (many of whom are cloud) this actually looks like an incredibly powerful deck. I think I might try this once phase two comes out for the new Esther, Elijah, and Widow to make this deck truly formidable.

Maybe I missed it (or do we already have a glossary somewhere?), but what is Shame LostSoul, and what does PoZ stand for (could not find an appropriate black card yet - maybe it's a Fortress, Site, Artefact or similar)?
For negating opponents TC characters also CoM or CoW Moses can be used...

Shame LS is the Jeremiah 3:25 LS, that sets a Hero from each territory aside for 2 turns when drawn.

PoZ is The Priest of Zeus, but everyone forgets the "The".

Also, I'm pretty sure the Lamb's Righteousness/The Exodus combo doesn't work with the final version of The Exodus, but did work with an earlier version - the Unity just checked the Heroes in battle, not that they were rescuing.

CoM is okay, but Moses negates Music Leader as well.

Note that the new Distressed Soul will be a problem in line with Moses/Babel/Golden Calf. Counters to things like this will be important.

I've thought about the green/white deck a couple times, but when I tried to build it, it basically just became an Exodus deck with a couple musicians splashed in. I still think it has some potential, but perhaps not as much as the OT women deck you mentioned.
ANB is good. Change my mind.

I did attempt the Green/White offense in T2, but the deck overall was too slow, so it probably needed a faster than average defense to be effective.

I would guess the same would hold true in T1.

True. I forgot the Unity was changes from "attacking Hero (Exodus)" to "rescuing Hero (Exodus)". Disregard, that combo doesn't work anymore.

Would it not work the other way around? Attack with, say, Moses banded to Miriam, play The Exodus to rescue Moses, then play Lamb's Righteousness to rescue a captured hero?

Lamb's Righteousness has a clause that says "If you haven't rescued a LS this turn".

You might want to include Mordecai and Sin And Justice in any deck with a lot of female heroes   ;)

That deck was used at the T2 Only this year...and paired with a defense of all female and genderless Evil Characters.  8)

Fascinating. When I went to the Viewer to check, the one on there doesn't have that clause, but the one on the RoJ page under Master Set Lists does. I'll take your word that the latter is correct, but now I'm curious what the source was for the Viewer version.

CoM is okay, but Moses negates Music Leader as well.
That's right but if ML either already was targeted by some Woes or Babel or similar it wouldn't matter anymore or one could protect ML with Joy.

Note that the new Distressed Soul will be a problem in line with Moses/Babel/Golden Calf. Counters to things like this will be important.
CoW Moses would negate Distressed like nearly any other LS (this is one part of his costs). But why do you see a problem with Distressed and Babel or Golden Calf? They nearly do the same.

If you're considering a a green/white build I think you'll be really pleased by the upcoming seasonal promo that gets paired with Rapha.  ::)

I'm not sure how it should be built. But I'm pretty sure it should include two copies of the newest seasonal promo.
