Title: New starter packs?
Post by: Sean on December 29, 2018, 07:47:01 AM
I am considering teaching my oldest son how to play.  Is there going to be a new starter pack coming soon?  It has been just over 5 years since I/J.

Also, is 7 really old enough? My oldest will be 7 in Jan but is reading well enough that I think he could start.

As far I know, there are no new starters coming out soon, nor are there any plans of releasing one in the future. The elders believe that the current starter is fine for what it is.
As for the age to start playing at, you should send a message to goalieking87. I'm not sure how old his kids are, but he taught his son an daughter to play when they were pretty young, and they are very good at the game.

I & J were definitely released with new players in mind so those are a pretty good place to start with teaching (especially young players). Probably the only complicated aspects you'll run into with I & J will be special initiative and the negate abilities.

BTW, it's great to see you stopping by the forum.  :)

Thanks Justin.

It's a little surprising that new starters are not in the plans from a marketing stand point.  The only reason I asked is because I'd rather not start (return to) playing with old cards.

I think I might create my own beginner decks instead of getting starters.

Hi Sean. Welcome back to the game! Concerning your last post about building your own starter decks you may want to consider a product I sell in which I have pre-made competitive decks (I call them Contender Decks) of different themes, card types, rarity, and are all discounted 30 to 40% off their value. And each deck comes with a deck box and sleeves.  The decks are designed to be simple enough to play but advanced enough for lower level tournaments. Check them out if this is something that interests you, and feel free to message me with any questions. I have other decks in the works but these are the ones currently available:

The current starters are on the new card face and are more than sufficient to teach the game. There is a good mix of cards with and without abilities which can help a newer player not get overwhelmed with the board state (another way of referring to all of the abilities on the table). Contender decks and Deck Builders are a good way of stepping into the game at a higher level but I find are a good second or third step.

Please note my main reason for creating my own deck is to be less expensive and/or be mono brigade for maximum ease of use.

One thing to keep in mind if you do it that way is that the newest cards tend to be more complex in nature than older cards (even though a lot of wording has been streamlined). In terms of "new" cards (i.e. cards with the updated card face), I & J starters are as simple as it gets.

That being said, there are several extremely viable mono-brigade deck types you can make. For example, I have been running a mono-Silver Revelation T1 deck for over a year, and I think I can say I've had more consistent success with that deck than any other T1 deck I've played.

What I'm finding is that I am going to have to take what I can get for the lower cost and just grab the I/J starter from the local Lifeway that I saw the other day.  I just can't stomach paying so much and then also have to add shipping costs.

That is a great place to start and your local store will really appreciate the business!

So I picked up the I/J starters and a couple of Angel Wars packs (all they had).  After looking through the cards I'm thinking that teaching my son(s) to play now would not be a great idea because of some of the card art being too scary.  Any other parents out there have any thoughts on the card art and the age of their child?

If you don't mind me asking, how old are your kids and which cards to do you feel are too scary for them?

my oldest will be 7 later this month, then 5, 3, and 5 months.  Most demon related cards from I/J starters, Vain Philosphy, Twice Afflicted, etc...

I am mostly concerned with my 5 year old because of how is with scary things.  I'd rather err on the side of caution as I don't want this to have a negative impact on them because of their lack of maturity due to their age when I know they'd be perfectly fine in a few years.

I'm not a parent, but my youngest brother started playing when he was 6, and to my knowledge the card art was never an issue.

Personally I would agree with the idea to wait awhile with the 5 year old.

Absolutely!  My wife and I had to quit watching shows that weren't even scary because my daughter who was 18 months - 2 years kept having nightmares about fight scenes and other things that were on the shows we were watching.  They are honestly pretty harmless in our minds but had a big impact on her (at the time).

Chris, that's exactly the kind of thing I'm thinking of.

My 6 yr old boy also doesn’t seem to have a problem.

He doesn’t like the card on Doubt at all. He also didn’t care for the art on House Arrest. I’ve never had him question the demon cards or seem scared (although I definitely understand the issue.

My biggest concern was actually when he and my 8yr old daughter came across the card Put to Flight. I didn’t pay attention to the verse, but it looks like David is holding Goliath’s head freshly cut off.  I simply explained to hem that David actually cut off Goliath’s head and in the kids stories they omit that part to make it more appropriate for kids.

They saw that pretty late at night and I don’t think they had nightmares.  My daughter struggles with that more than my son.

At any rate, it is import to me to have these conversations with my kids regardless of when. If left to my own devices I probably wouldn’t have chosen to share about Goliath anytime soon, but I also don’t see it as bad in having the conversation and maybe it would have been a missed opportunity if I didn’t.

They do also have access to unedited scriptures. My daughter is more of a reader so it applies more to her, but she could come across any information that could have a similar effect to card images and I want her to know how to deal with that and come and talk with me.

I also understand that everyone’s situation is different. Not everything will be the same. But thought I would share in case you find any of this helpful.

Also, just for the purposes of Doubt and House Arrest. They are pretty much just pictures of ugly guys.
