I agree with Prof U about possibly doing 2 games, 1 for experienced players and 1 for the newer players who like the idea and would like to learn to play.  I also want to get all the details hammered out.

However, I have a tourney to deal with in the morning, so this will have to wait unfortunately ;)  I will be back here soon to help work this out :)

We should probably say how many times we've played then.  I think I've played 3-4 games by email and 2 games in person.

It would be my preference for us to let each list fill up before starting.  Since we're committing the next 6 months to this project, I feel like it's worth waiting a couple weeks to make sure that the games are balanced.  It also gives twice as many people the chance to play.

However, if no more people join after a while, we might be forced to combine games and just go with what we've got.  Also, I don't feel like its really my call as I'm still seeing this as mainly Redoubter's gig, and I'm just participating and suggesting stuff.

It won't be just my gig, it's everyone's gig who wants in ;)  I liked your splitting of the games, let's just all coordinate to get everyone who wants in to be able to play :)

And you can always have a game of less than 7, some of the countries just get troops that don't move.  Hopefully that doesn't happen, though I thought we initially had 8 or 9 people respond that they wanted to play, but I only see 7 names so far...we should have decent-sized games in the end.

I own the game, but have never gotten a group interested enough to actually play the game.  I would love to play.

I'll play!  I'm a board game fanatic.  I've played this twice I think.
Gates of Hell is by far the best card in the game.  No questions asked.

If you've played twice, then it would probably be most fair to put you in the experienced game.  None of us has played a ton of games, but all the people in the beginner game will be playing for the first time.

I own the game, but have never gotten a group interested enough to actually play the game.  I would love to play.
I'll add you to the beginner game

6. redemptioncousin
7.

Beginner Game:

Yes, you can play with less than 7.  But I think it's a HUGE step down in how fun the game is.  Of course that's just my opinion, but I'd rather wait for the game to fill up than to start with less players.

I suppose it doesn't matter as much for the beginner game though since it will be all of your first game.  You won't know how much more fun the 7-player version is, so you won't be disappointed.  And it will still give you a good chance to learn how to use your pieces effectively and use your communication with other players even more effectively :)

Agreed. I'm definitely not in.

Since, this was brought back up by not me,

In order to get ahead and win the game, you will have to lie to and betray someone at some point.
This isn't always correct (although it usually is).  Each player has to decide for themselves how to handle the ethical dilemmas of Diplomacy.  Lying is completely accepted and even expected in the game, so most players are willing to tell two different players that they will be supporting their attacks when in reality they are only helping one to kill the other.

However, not all players choose to go the easy route.  I personally choose to never intentionally tell another player something that is not true.  But I don't always tell everything that I know either.  So if an opponent is jumping to an inaccurate conclusion based on something someone said, I don't feel compelled to correct their misconception.

My choice to avoid lies in a game where most other players will still lie to me does give me a bit of a disadvantage.  But I personally feel better about playing that way.  And despite the handicap, I have had some success in the past.

I didn't realize that telling half truths is not lying. I've probably sinned a lot less than I thought now!

I understand the point behind the sarcasm, and I'm not going to try to convince you to feel otherwise about it, because to you it is not alright to participate in this kind of game.  There are others here who do not feel the same issue when playing a game like this, knowing what it is going in, but we should not try to convince you to join in :)  I'd like to leave it at that, and hope everyone else is respectful of the positions of Alex (and others).
